Blu-ray Alert: March 19-25

One of 2010’s Oscar-nominees and two direct-to-DVD sequels dominate this week’s paltry HD releases while conspicuously absent is an iconic thriller from the ‘90s that would be high on most Blu-ray wish lists.

The Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man was nominated for best picture and original screenplay, and has earned seriously high praise for its HD audio and video transfer (Hi-Def Digest called it “a loving representation of the film” and DVD Verdict thought it “exceptionally strong”).

Witness Tom Berenger’s freefall from grace with Smokin’ Aces 2: The Assassins’ Ball, which also is due Wednesday, while Thursday’s [REC]2 continues where the original Spanish zombies sensation left off before being re-made by Hollywood as Quarantine.

Hard on the hooves of The Warlords and Red Cliff comes the inferior The Storm Warriors, which twins Oxide Pang Chun and Danny Pang directed.

Meanwhile, the week’s biggest Blu-ray omission is the 15th anniversary edition of Se7en, which is being offered on DVD but not in HD – even though a Blu-ray version was released nine months ago in North America, albeit without the wealth of extras.
