Blu-Ray Alert: March 5-11

Two versions of John Woo’s Red Cliff and the double-act of Julie & Julia are this week’s standouts on Blu-ray.

On Wednesday, Warner Home Video is offering separate theatrical and special editions of the highest-grossing movie in Chinese box office history: the former is being released as The Battle of Red Cliff ($47.95) and clocks in at 147 minutes; the latter as Red Cliff: Special Edition Part 1 + 2 ($59.95), with a running time of 274 minutes.

The theatrical version screened last year on the film festival circuit but this will be your first chance to see the extended edition.

Extras on both sets are the same: a behind-the-scenes short and an interview with Woo.

Julie & Julia comes complete with a commentary by writer/director Nora Ephron, a making-of short and exclusive Blu-ray cooking lessons, including how to poach and scramble eggs, make Hollandaise sauce, and cook butter poached lobster and braise beef short ribs!

Also new from Wednesday are My Sister’s Keeper and a clutch of thrillers, ranging from Bruce Willis’ latest, Surrogates, to the straight-to-Blu-ray Messenger 2: The Scarecrow + Solstice, Push, The Baader Meinhoff Complex and Whiteout.

On the back catalogue front there’s The Green Berets, Any Given Sunday, We Are Marshall and The Passion of the Christ (Director’s Edition)

Due Thursday is another Blu-ray premiere, the James Lee Burke dramatisation, In the Electric Mist, which stars Tommy Lee Jones as New Orleans sleuth Dave Robicheaux.
