Golden Globes a FTA Disgrace

Rarely have the programming priorities of NZ’s free-to-air networks been shown up as shamefully as with this year’s Golden Globes results.

In a ceremony that surprised many pundits, only two major prizes went to FTA series: TV2’s Empire and the yet-to-screen My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

Everything else was won by series that screen on Sky’s SoHo channel (American Horror Story: Hotel, Mad Men, The Affair, Show Me a Hero) or are streamed on Lightbox (Mozart in the Jungle, Mr Robot, Wolf Hall).

If you don’t subscribe to these services, the final season of Mad Men is out on Blu-ray while Wolf Hall is DVD-only (but can be imported on Blu-ray from the US or UK).

Mozart in the Jungle (which is in its second season on Lightbox) has yet to be released anywhere on disc and the latest seasons of AHS and The Affair will remain SoHo exclusives for several more months yet.

But Show Me a Hero is due next month on DVD (again, you’ll have to import the Blu-ray from the US) while Mr Robot lands here on both DVD and Blu-ray on March 2.

If you can’t wait that long, it goes on sale this week in the US.

Blu-ray.com says the show “shines on Blu-ray … with excellent full-frame clarity, allowing the viewer to soak in all kinds of varied background” while DVD Talk says its “gorgeous” 1080p, AVC-encoded transfer “looks fantastic … with appropriate colour throughout, no matter the palette.”
