New to Blu: April 13-19

The Blu-ray of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I has enjoyed a lively reception from US critics.

“This is a great looking transfer that is demo-worthy in many of its scenes,” judged High-Def Digest, which also gave high marks to the picture-in-picture commentary.

Blu-ray.com reckons “the 1080p/AVC-encoded video transfer represents a magnificent rendering of the film’s intended presentation” and DVD Authority thought it “rock solid … despite the running time (146 minutes), it’s hard to find any fault in how this looks”.

The four-disc set, which includes the opening scene of Part II, goes on sale globally on Friday while out today is the animated supervillain romp, Megamind.

AVForums called the image “spectacular” but noted it didn’t stand out from the CG crowd while High-Def Digest said the transfer “is rife with brilliantly rendered colours that pop off the screen” but “hampered by constant, relentless aliasing”.

DVD File agreed: “Yes, colours are lovely and vibrant, and black levels are consistent from start to finish, but there are elements of smear that appear very regularly throughout the film, and noise appears far more often than it should (especially considering this is a film that isn’t even a year old yet).”

However, it called the DTS-HD 7.1 Master Audio “sensational … a reference-grade stunner”.

Another animated newcomer, Alpha and Omega, is going direct-to-DVD/BD, along with Bordertown, Lost City Raiders, The Loved Ones, Operation Endgame (aka Rogues Gallery), and The Chaperone.

On the back catalogue front, Firefly is being re-issued on Blu-ray while being dusted off are the dramas, Ten Canoes and The Falcon and the Snowman, the 1978 cult shocker, I Spit On Your Grave, and season two of the original Twilight Zone.

This week’s documentaries range from natural history — National Geographic Kingdom of the Blue Whale, Into the Pride — to the cosmic Through the Wormhole With Morgan Freeman.
