New to Blu: August 17-24

Of all the back catalogue classics tumbling on to Blu-ray, The Big Lebowski probably will have HD dudes the most excited.

It was one of the first HD titles to be released when Universal backed the rival Blu-ray format, HD DVD, in 2007.

It’s belatedly bowing this week on Blu-ray here and in the US, where the remastered transfer has been described as “rather handsome and spiffy” and conveying “all the colour and warmth of Roger Deakins’ cinematography”.

True fans may wish to opt for the US editions as its boasts “fun and graphically inventive” Digibook packaging.

However, expect the mix of HD and SD extras to be the same, including a picture-in-picture track and an interactive trivia game.

The direct-to-disc thriller, Faster, looks and sounds “spectacular” with black levels that are “rock solid from start to finish” and a DTS-HD Master Audio track that’s “at least as good”.

Also bypassing cinemas is the comedy, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, with a transfer that “may not be jaw-dropping, but it is thoroughly satisfying” and audio that’s “a bit uneven”.

The week’s other comedy is the Area 51 spoof, Paul, which has “a near-perfect digital transfer” for both the theatrical and “unrated” version: “a terrific picture with satisfying black levels and seamless integration of the CGI alien into hundreds of shots”.

Also new this week are Doctor Who: Series 6, Volume 1, Top Gear: The Complete Series 15 and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.
