New to Blu: August 4-10

Blasts from the past abound this week on Blu-ray, with the highlights being Saving Private Ryan and your first chance to buy each of The Godfather movies in a separate volume.

Also making their HD debuts on disc are two other gangster dramas – Carlito’s Way and Collateral – and two sci-fi favourites – Total Recall and War of the Worlds – along with Dante’s Peak and Doctor Who: Series 5, Volume 2.

The US Blu-ray release of Saving Private Ryan scored mixed reviews, with the HD audio and video winning far more praise than the second disc of SD extras (only the trailers are in HD).

While there were complaints about the extras “not befitting” a movie of this calibre, most critics highly recommended the “fascinating” movie-length documentary, Shooting War, which chronicles how WWII was filmed.

As for The Godfather movies being released separately on Blu-ray for $35 each, the bad news is each volume comes with only a commentary, excellent as it is, by director Francis Ford Coppola and none of the documentaries included on the bonus disc that was packaged with the trilogy box set.

Meanwhile, fresh from the multiplex circuit are The Bounty Hunter, The Last Song and Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang. All of these titles go on sale Wednesday.
