New to Blu: February 11-17

Gone Girl is clear and away the Blu-ray of the week.

“The story of Gone Girl is gritty, dirty, and brimming with texture, but the 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfer from Fox is the polar opposite.

“Sleek, smooth, and antiseptically clean, the image exhibits no grain and sports exceptional contrast and clarity.”

“The IMDb lists this as having been digitally shot with the Red Epic Dragon, with a 6K source format transferred to a 4K DI.

“The results are spectacular, at least when a certain slack is granted for the overall dark and shadowy ambience, not to mention ubiquitous colour grading, of much of the film.”

“Audio-wise, the disc includes a lossless English DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix that’s highly atmospheric and delivers clean dialogue throughout.”

“The Blu-ray release of The Judge features a commanding 1080p/AVC-encoded video presentation, albeit one I suspect has been processed a touch too much.

“Contrast is quite hot, artificial sharpening is a bit too aggressive, and ringing, crush and grain inconsistencies are minor issues.”

“Highlights tend to blow out, particularly in outdoor scenes, and black crush is occasionally an issue.

“Otherwise, detail is plentiful in close-ups and wide shots; texture is abundant in fabrics and the courtroom dressings; and skin tones are natural.”

‘“The DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio is superb. Giving us dialogue that is easy to hear, accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack that doesn’t intrude upon the conversations between the characters.”

Horror prequel Annabelle has an “outstanding DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack that’ll scare the bejesus out of listeners” while the transfer “is relatively cinematic, although it takes on the harsh gloss of video during intense fluctuations in light, and the limitations of digital cinematography reveal themselves in afterimage trails during the dimmest parts of the finale.”

The digitally shot If I Stay “boasts some excellent detail, with a richly defined image that observes the key locations, both indoor and outdoor”, and the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound mix is “a good but not outstanding effort”.
