New to Blu: February 12-18

There’s nothing horrific about the latest horror sequel’s resurrection on Blu-ray.

“Though its budget puts it in the company of independent films, Insidious: Chapter 2 looks every bit as polished and terrific as major new studio fare.

“The Blu-ray’s 2.40:1 presentation is just about flawless, the only hiccups being the deliberate kind in segments shot by characters on handheld video or given the appearance of a 1980s camcorder.”

Insidious: Chapter 2 also makes its Blu-ray debut with a first-rate and brilliantly creepy DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack that will have viewers jumping out their seats.

“The design makes exceptional use of the rears with a variety of noises and sounds that effectively immerse the listener and send chills up the spine.”

About Time has been given a fantastic 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode that presents the picture in a 2.40:1 aspect ratio.

“The film is filled with beautifully bright and detailed imagery and this transfer allows you to perfectly see into these well-planned and intimately filmed shots.”

“As with the video, the audio is exactly what you would hope for from a big release like this.

“The English 5.1 DTS-HD MA audio track is excellent. Obviously, there aren’t any explosions and there’s very little violence in the film, but the surround channels manage to guide us through the world of the film.”

Also new are Diana (“while the film looks sharp and is nicely detailed, it’s curiously flat and devoid of much pop, aside from some great standalone sequences”), Don Jon (“sharpness is superb throughout, and colour is bold and richly saturated with accurate flesh tones”) and A Case of You (“won’t pop off your screen, but it appears to be an accurate presentation”).

The Americans – The Complete First Season features a commentary on the episode, The Colonel, several shorts, a gag reel and deleted scenes while cult movie collectors can choose from Andy Warhol’s Blood for Dracula, Andy Warhol’s Flesh For Frankenstein and Fear City (“though far from flawless, the presentation is the very best I have seen for this cult film”).
