New to Blu: February 5-11

There’s nothing chequered about the HD quality of this week’s flagship release, racing car drama Rush.

Rush looks every bit as good as a recent theatrical release should courtesy of yet another terrific 1080p/AVC-encoded video transfer from Universal.

“Colours are desaturated but beautifully so, with lovely, sunstruck skin tones, rich black levels and excellent contrast.

“Detail is exacting as well, with naturally defined edges, nicely resolved textures and a hint of grain, perfectly preserved.”

“All in all this is demo territory from start to finish.”

“The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix is an absolute feast for audiophiles, as it generates a great listening experience that takes a heightened approach to the world of Formula 1 racing, and gives it a bombastic Hollywood makeover that sounds tremendous.”

Prince Avalanche has received an excellent 1080p/2.40:1 transfer.

“Detail is tremendous throughout, really letting the viewer appreciate the film’s melancholy-yet-gorgeous imagery.”

“The score by instrumental band Explosions in the Sky, in collaboration with David Wingo, is the true star of the English 5.1 track, guiding us through many of the dreamy interludes and otherwise quiet moments.

“The dialogue is clear and the sound effects perfectly complement the mood.”

Also new are Downton Abbey: The London Season (Christmas Special 2013); Battle of the Damned (“the presentation on this disc is clean and clear, with plenty of detail, but it has the inorganic look of much material shot on HD digital video”); The Lifeguard; New World; Vendetta; and the anime titles Blood-C: The Last Dark, Blue Exorcist 05, Michiko & Hatchin – Collection 02 and Sword Art Online Vol. 2: Aincrad Part 2.
