New to Blu: July 14-20

The Blu-ray release of Law Abiding Citizen boasts a director’s cut of the vigilante thriller that isn’t available on DVD.

Unusually, the nine-minute director’s cut is on one disc and the theatrical release, with a commentary by director F Gary Gray (The Italian Job), on the other.

The director’s cut disc also has four HD extras, including a “trailer mash-up” that’s exclusive to the Blu-ray.

Moreover, even with two Blu-ray discs, at $39.95 this release is more competitively priced than most.

Critics trashed the movie’s content — “imagine Saw meets Prison Break,” quipped one — but gushed over the HD specs. Casual viewers may be concerned about the murkiness of some images but that’s what the filmmakers intended.

Law Abiding Citizen releases Wednesday, along with The Men Who Stare at Goats, Remember Me and Daybreakers, a sci-fi spin on vampire movies that was shot in Queensland, stars locals Sam Neill and Jay Laga’aia, and apparently boasts a stunning Blu-ray transfer (although the NZ edition doesn’t include the US digital copy).

In a lighter vein is the horror romp, Stan Helsing, which goes on sale on Friday, while Monday morning brings the ’60s classics, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, and Tuesday, La Boheme Royal Opera House.
