New to Blu: July 6 – 12

Kung Fu Panda 3 unsurprisingly looks fantastic on Blu-ray. Fox/DreamWorks’ 1080p presentation is a sight to behold, another example of how the Blu-ray medium can really pounce on material like this and dazzle even after all these years.

“The image is slick and clean. Details are ridiculously impressive.”

“With the movie skewed for a tween audience, the Blu-ray extras entice that demographic with a wide range of content.

“Best of the bunch is a 5-minute compilation of cute creatures with directors Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Alessandro Carloni offering a look at real baby pandas in action that inspired some of the young bears in the movie.”

10 Cloverfield Lane was digitally photographed. The 1080p Blu-ray transfer can be a bit noisy at the source but provides an overall positive viewing experience.”

“The quality of the transfer is about what one would expect for a digitally shot movie, but not without faults – at least one of which is from the original master and not this 1080p transfer.”

“The Dolby Atmos track — which downscales to a phenomenal 7.1 Dolby TrueHD presentation — really delivers a punch, overshadowing the capable digital transfer.”

Gods of Egypt boasts a strong 1080p presentation. So, while the movie’s overuse of digital wizardry might translate as soulless, at least it looks technically proficient when projected on the screen.”

“The crisp 1080p transfer doesn’t do the film many favours, since it accentuates the cheesiness of the special effects.”

Gods of Egypt features a rowdy DTS:X (DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 core) track that provides all of the bombast (and maybe then some) that audiophiles have come to expect from these special effects blockbusters. There is a ton of surround information from virtually the get go here.”

Going direct to disc are ArrowheadMiracles from Heaven and I Am Wrath while TV-on-BD newcomers are limited to seasons four of House of Cards and one of Killjoys (“a strong all-around transfer”).
