New to Blu: June 4-10

This year’s Oscar-winning best picture at last is liberated on Blu-ray.

12 Years a Slave receives a thoroughly impressive 1080p/AVC-encoded high definition video presentation in the movie’s original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.40:1 widescreen.

“Irrespective of the brutality of the subject-matter and substance, the scenery is utterly exquisite, and [director Steve] McQueen delivers a frequently stunning-looking feature.”

12 Years a Slave‘s lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix is beautifully rendered and provides a wealth of involving surround activity.”

“Special features are limited, but provide a good overview of the film’s production and historical inspiration.”

Lone Survivor features stunning video and fully immersive audio.

“Supplements could have been more in number, but what’s included is fantastic.”

“The digital source is mostly pristine, but there is some grain-like noise visible throughout (particularly in the dark) and very minor signs of false contouring and shimmering in isolated shots.”

“Matching and surpassing the film’s video quality is the sound, as the 5.1 DTS HD MA lossless track is breathtaking.”

Grudge Match steps into the ring with a 1080p/AVC-encoded video presentation as young and spry as a recent theatrical release should offer.

“Colours are lifelike and natural, with strong primaries, well-saturated skintones and deep, satisfying black levels.”

“The 5.1 DTS-HD master audio packs quite a punch too, particularly in the .1 part.”

“The sixth season of True Blood takes a vicious, angry bite out of Blu-ray with a first-rate 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode that shines like the dazzling, glowing orbs from Sookie’s hands.”

“Presented with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, the show sounds absolutely wonderful.

“From the first notes of the opening song the full-ranged audio does a magnificent job of accenting the emotions of scenes without ever becoming intrusive or overbearing.”

Going direct to disc are Spike Lee’s re-make of Old Boy, Jackie Chan’s Chinese Zodiac (“technically sound … but the obvious English dubbing hurts the movie”), and Violet and Daisy

Memphis Belle flies again in “an excellent encoding of this handsomely shot picture” and the only new music release is All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman.
