New to Blu: May 10 – 16

Patriots Day, a dramatisation of the Boston Marathon bombing, earns a 4K-UHD release, as do re-issues of The Mummy Returns and The Mummy – Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor, while Oscar favourites Fences and Hidden Figures are Blu-ray only.

And exclusive to Australasia is a remastered version of Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which is ironic given the 2014 update never landed here on Blu-ray.

Patriots Day was shot digitally, in this case using ARRI Alexa XT cameras in ARRIRAW Open Gate format (3.4K) at 1.55:1,” The Digital Bits reports.

“It was finished as a 2K Digital Intermediate in 2.39:1 widescreen, given an HDR color timing pass, and upsampled for this release. The image quality is quite good overall.”

Blu-ray.com praised the 4K release’s “noticeable uptick in both detail levels and palette reproduction” and called the 1080p transfer  “a generally sharp and appealing presentation, with excellent sharpness and fine detail levels when lighting conditions allow”.

Hidden Figures won a 4K release in the US but here is limited to demo-worthy Blu-ray. “With an ultra-fine layer of grain showering every scene, the high-def presentation is gorgeous and film-like,” High-Def Digest said.

Home Theater Forum graded Fences 5/5 for its HD transfer. “The film’s colour palette is relatively constrained, indicative of the period setting, with muted red, browns, yellows and grey-brown dominating, but the contrast is rich, as is the level of detail.”

Also new are:

  • Live By Night (“such a beautiful Blu-ray that some may decide to acquire it for its technical superiority”)
  • Paterson (“contrast has been superbly applied for a first rate picture, and black levels are quite fine”)
  • Train to Busan (“features the flawless clarity that comes with a digital shoot, but it also carries the flatness that digital cinema can fall victim to”)
  • The Hollow Crown – The War Of The Roses (“a stunning upgrade from the original Hollow Crown series of just a few years ago”)
  • Childhood’s End (“not particularly noteworthy in any way but that, at the same time, doesn’t offend the eyes”)
  • The Kettering Incident
  • Cosmos: A Personal Voyage – Utimate Edition [Remastered]
  • WWE: Diamond Dallas Page: Positively Living
  • Sailor Moon Crystal: Set 2 (Eps 15-26)
  • Assassination Classroom: Season 2 – Part 1 (Eps 1-13)
  • Charlotte – Volume 1 (Episodes 1-7)
  • Space Dandy – Complete Series.
