New to Blu: May 15-21

It’s another unusually slim Blu-ray slate this week, although all three newcomers have top-notch transfers with arguably The Master being the most masterful.

Alas, this 65mm post-WWII drama about a cult leader lands here with key extras missing in action.

“The Region 1 United States version contains an 8-minute behind-the-scenes extra, Unguided Message, and the 1946 John Huston documentary on World War II veterans, Let There Be Light, which are not contained on the Region 4 Australian release.”

Otherwise, “this is one of the most consistently impressive video presentations that I’ve come across.

“Technically and artistically potent, the image is virtually flawless and absolutely breathtaking.”

“Similar to the Blu-Ray presentation of There Will Be Blood, this is meticulous treatment of visuals that demands it.”

“The 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode that Jack Reacher has been given is flawless.

“It’s gorgeous, carrying a clean, sharp look with highly visible details and not a single problem.”

“The high definition transfer reveals a gorgeous film-like texture.

“Light grain remains over the entirety of the film, gently helping to accentuate details and preserve that sought-after cinematic flavour. Details are unsurprisingly spectacular.”

“Paramount has done a phenomenal job with Jack Reacher on Blu-ray, offering a first-rate video and audio presentation and a decent collection of bonus features.”

Gangster Squad blasts its way onto Blu-ray with a faithful 2:40:1 framed, AVC/MPEG-4 encoded transfer.”

“The heyday of Los Angeles in the late ‘40s looks like you could step into the picture and fit right in.

“Colours are bold, Emma Stone’s red dress illuminates and the tweed suits radiate detail like you wouldn’t believe.”

“The Blu-ray’s 5.1 DTS-HD master audio offers suitable thrills, the abundance of gunfire yielding a lively, directional sound field in which to be immersed.”

“A solid spate of high-def exclusives sweeten this release, painting a vivid portrait of the era and the colorful figures who populated it.”

  1. The old adage of “the worse the film, the better the video/DVD/BD” holds true!
