New to Blu: Movies > June 5-11

Three of this year’s Oscar-winners are unleashed this week on Blu-ray: Django Unchained (best supporting actor, best screenplay), Anna Karenina (best costume design) and Silver Linings Playbook (best actress).

Silver Linings Playbook has “a fantastic presentation with no digital issues to report.

“The beautiful, shot-by-shot ready view of the world in which our characters inhabit is beautiful and really draws the viewer in.”

“Excellent video and audio transfers, as well as a decent supplemental package, contribute to the extremely high recommendation this best picture nominee deserves.”

Anna Karenina is presented in a 2.40:1 1080p VC-1 encode that presents the movie in the best possible light.

“Colours are quite striking throughout as a deliberate statement of design, and this transfer shows them all off to dazzling effect.”

“The audio presentation for Anna Karenina is another stellar aspect of the technical presentation.

“Composer Dario Marianelli has crafted a sweepingly beautiful score and it is well-presented in lossless quality with an immersive 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio presentation.”

Past Oscar-winners contribute to a strong back-catalogue slate that includes In the Name of the Father (“has not been DNR’d to death, and fine grain is still quite evident throughout”), Tom Hanks’ PhiladelphiaSplashTurner & Hooch and Sleepless in Seattle, and Walt Disney’s Peter Pan.

“The 1080p presentation for Peter Pan is another supremely gorgeous Blu-ray rending of a Disney masterpiece from the vaults.

“Like their other animated masterpieces released on Blu-ray, Disney has digitally rejuvenated Peter Pan, taking the image so far back in time, that it more resembles the original hand painted 2D animation cels, than it does a 1953 release print of the film.”

Going direct to disc are Stolen (“offers rich colours and solid details from start to finish”) and For a Good Time, Call … (“very bright, very colourful“).

  1. I quite like Silver Linings Playbook apart from the swearing … there is quite alot of it sadly 🙁

  2. Hated it, it was formulaic and acted by two uncharismatic leads, bleeech. As stated before – often, the worse the film, the better the video presentation – and this BD looks excellent. Django, on the other hand was superb, didn’t mind the #$@! at all. Makes for a great double feature with the Franco Nero Django.
