New to Blu: Movies > October 30-November 5

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No … it’s another lousy deal for NZ Blu-ray buyers.

The version of Man of Steel that goes on sale this week in 2D and 3D editions lacks the picture-in-picture commentary that appears to be exclusive to the US release.

Americans have to wait another two weeks to buy the latest Superman movie on disc.

But at least they will be rewarded with Journey of Discovery: Creating Man of Steel: “an immersive feature-length experience that allows viewers to watch the movie with director Zack Snyder and stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane and others as they share the incredible journey to re-imagine Superman.”

We’re used to this sort of short-changing from other distributors in this territory — just last week Paramount Home Entertainment released World War Z in NZ and Australia without the gorier extended cut included on the US disc.

But Warner Bros has a proud track record of offering the same content in all regions, if not at the same time: its back catalogue selection in NZ is woeful compared to the US.

At least the local release comes with 7.1 audio and the extras — as routine and skimpy as they are — are on a separate disc from the movie, so don’t eat into its bit rate.

Also new are the direct-to-disc Genghis: The Legend of the Ten, Rancid, All Superheroes Must Die  (“a generally pleasing image, with solid blacks, sharp focus, good detail and distinctive but not overly saturated colours”), Reverse Runner, The Crocodile 3D and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (“a wonderfully varied colour palette”).

  1. I have watched seasons 1-9 of Smallville on DVD and I’m now watching season 10 on Blu-ray. SO much better on Blu-ray. Anyway, I will probably get Man of Steel … must be a Superman fan 🙂

  2. Just a quick update on that Journey of Discovery doc on the Man of Steel Blu-ray. In fact we do get it, but only as a Ultraviolet Digital download. Just found this out when checking the redemption voucher in the Blu-ray pack where it is advertised as a bonus.

  3. You can watch Man of Steel on Flixter with Ultraviolet, which includes Journey of Discovery: Creating Man of Steel 🙂

  4. Thanks, Mark and Trevor! Thats great news. Just goes to show, should always read the fine print …

  5. Is UV in HD or SD?

  6. Depends. It should be if you buy the Blu-ray of the movie but it could be 720p, 1080i or 1080p. And the news apparently is not good for Apple/Mac iOS users, according to this Sony Pictures Home Entertainment FAQ site: “We currently deliver HD streaming to devices where the device display supports an HD resolution and where HD output protection (HDCP) can be detected and enabled. For these reasons, users of Apple iOS or Mac OS devices may not be able to stream in HD, even though they own an HD version of a movie or TV show.” Here’s another guide to what to expect.
