New to Blu: Movies > September 19-25

Kiwis get the jump on Men in Black 3, which goes on sale here two months ahead of the US and UK.

Of course, being first isn’t always best, given how the otherwise awesome Avengers Blu-ray is missing the director’s commentary that will be on the US release.

MIB3 is being released in 2D and 3D versions, with the latter including the extras, “3D Models of MIB Technology” and “Converting to 3D”, which is in 3D.

Here, the sequel stands out amid a sea of mostly mediocrity, with the only other notable newcomer being the direct-to-disc thriller, The Woman in Black.

The Woman in Black shines on Blu-ray. This is another top-tier Sony transfer, and viewers are in for a wonderful treat of well-defined shadows and visual gloom.”

“Much of the film is set at night inside the spooky mansion, and black levels meet expectations with lots of opulent, penetrating shadows strewn throughout.”

This Must Be the Place’s HD transfer is “quite impressive. From start to finish detail is excellent, clarity consistently pleasing and contrast levels stable.”

The Lady has a “sumptuous” transfer: “Detail is excellent throughout, from the close-ups to the longer shots.

The quality of Man on a Ledge’s transfer appears to be variable.

“Blacks aren’t particularly strong, and look to be crushed to a feint green in places, clearly as a result of the grading on the movie, but still manage to look inky at times …

“Overall, the image quality seems to vary from scene to scene, from very good, to decidedly average.”

“The 2.40:1/1080p high definition widescreen image looks very sharp, with realistic colours, excellent fine detail, and no visible digital tinkering.

“We’re at the point now with home video that we expect most new releases to look flawless, and though that’s not a word I would use to describe this transfer, I will say it looks as good as it should.”

Also new are Titanic: 100 Years in 3D, Bad Ass, Neverlost, The Deep and Sweet Karma: Dominatrix Story.

  1. The Woman in Black did have a theatrical relase in the UK and other parts of Europe. I imported the German uncut Blu-ray version of this movie and we really enjoyed it. Decent atmospheric ghost story with some stunning locations. Picture and sound quality really good. Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) plays the main character. His acting was good but it was hard not to think of him as Harry Potter. We were waiting for hime to whip out his wand at some stage in the movie!
