Oh Boy! Look What’s On Blu-ray At Last

The most popular New Zealand movie of all time, Boy, at last lands on Blu-ray.

The highest-grossing hit after Avatar in the year it was released will finally show up in HD on December 5.

Boy: The Collector’s Edition will include all the extras on the special edition DVD that came out three years ago; a US Blu-ray of Boy, with fewer extras, went on sale six months ago.

The movie looked stunning on DVD and should shine on Blu-ray, judging by most of the US reviews:

  • “this Blu-ray comes through with a nice looking, but sometimes-inconsistent image that manages to highlight the specific locations of the film in significant detail” (High-Def Digest)
  • “minus a few errant specks and some noise in the shadows, there are no issues whatsoever with the 35mm print or its digital presentation” (Blu-ray.com)
  • “a beautiful HD transfer of this extremely attractive picture” (DVD Savant)
  • “a bright and colourful 1.85:1, 1080p transfer that captures its laid back, homemade feel quite well” (DVD Verdict).
A swag of NZ titles are out next month, albeit on DVD only. They include the movie White Lies (which includes interviews with producer John Barnett, writer Witi Ihimaera, director Dana Rotberg, and stars Antonia Prebble, Whirimako Black and Rachel House) and four HD TV shows: series three of Nothing Trivial, both series of Super City (the first of which has a bonus disc and was directed by Boy’s Taika Waititi) and Country Calendar: Best of 2013.
