Axe Drops on Penny Dreadful

Tonight’s double-episode season three climax of Penny Dreadful (SoHo, 8.30) is also the series final.

The Gothic horror shocked fans in the US on Sunday when, as Deadline Hollywood headlined its report: “Penny Dreadful Declares ‘The End’ As [SPOILER] Dies In Season 3 Finale”.

Observed Yahoo TV: “While millions of eyes were glued to Game of Thrones on Sunday night, some of us were in the throes of watching Penny Dreadful wrap up its superb final season.

“Showtime aired the last two Season 3 episodes back to back, and they were frequently excellent hours that brought all the main characters together for sometimes surprising fates.”

Since then, Showtime boss David Nevins and creator John Logan have confirmed [MORE SPOILERS} the series has finished with a shocking outcome.

“I knew it’s going to be very emotional and I imagined Sunday to be even somewhat traumatic because people have a very deep emotional connection to these characters, but it seemed like why should we spoil that?” Nevins told Deadline Hollywood.

“Why should we sort of lessen the blow? Because that’s what TV and certainly good storytelling is about — creating an emotional experience. So it’s going to end with a card that says the end and let people live in that experience and then we explain that on Monday morning.”

“That’s what the ending of this series is,” Logan argues, “it is meant to be a strong, bold, theatrical ending because I think that’s what our fans like and to water that down with an announcement or having them know I think would be an act of bad faith.”

There’s a similar interview in Entertainment Weekly but note it’s also rife with spoilers.
