Big News for X-Files Lovers

Two landmark drama series of the last 20 years soon will screen here for the first time in HD.

Next month SoHo will screen Big Love (2006-2011) from the first season (10.30 weeknights, from December 8) and in January The Zone will dust off The X-Files (1993-2002) from the beginning.

Big Love was a native HD production but The X-Files was SD from the outset so how good is it likely to look?

Spookily good, according to this source, which has posted screenshots of the show’s HD presentation on a German TV channel earlier this year, along with links to how it was remastered.

Picture comparisons posted on various sites already show a huge improvement in image quality, although sadly the effects footage has only been upscaled, not redone from scratch like Star Trek: The Next Generation’s.”

Like ST: TNG, a Blu-ray release seems imminent for The X-Files but 20th Century Fox has yet to confirm this.

In the meantime, check out how Mulder and Scully shape up in 1080i from January 16, when X-Files will air 10.30 weeknights.

  1. X-Files should look good as it was shot on film, not video.

  2. Just watched the 1st 3 episodes of The X Files. The HD picture quality was very good. Not quite on a par with a modern show but a marked improvement in picture quality when compared to the DVD version of this series.

  3. Great news: The X Files series is now being released on Blu-ray in December this year. Will come with a widescreen picture and DTS HD Master audio soundtrack. I have just bought the entire Lost in Space series on Blu-ray from Amazon Canada and now just hoping that Buffy the Vampire Slayer and 24 will be released on blu ray next year, although the later series of 24 were released on Blu-ray.
