Can Australian Survivor, um, Survive?

TVNZ 2 is hastily re-running Australian Survivor off-peak in a bid to improve its sampling and abysmal primetime ratings.

It’s rejigging Saturday daytime from tomorrow with repeats of the first three episodes from 12.20pm, replacing the previously scheduled Supergirl, Once Upon a Time, Kevin Can Wait, Dr Ken and You’re Back in the Room.

From September 9, two back-to-back repeats of Australian Survivor will replace Kevin Can Wait, Dr Ken and YBITR.

Don’t be surprised if TVNZ 2 winds up burning off first-run eps on Saturday afternoons given how badly Australian Survivor’s faring on weeknights.

Tuesday’s episode averaged only 2.6% of TVNZ 2’s 18-49 demographic, finishing third after Three’s time slot-winning The Block NZ (9.1%) and NCIS (4.5%), and TVNZ 1’s Unreal Estate (3.0%) and Border Patrol (2.7%).

It was an even worse story Wednesday, when Australian Survivor sunk to an 18-49 average of 1.9% opposite The Block NZ’s 7.5%, NCIS: Los Angeles’ 2.9%, HomeMADE’s 3.3%, and Rachel Hunter’s Tour of Beauty and Offspring’s 2.5%.

As a result, a repeat of one of TVNZ 2’s most enduring staples, The Big Bang Theory, averaged a shockingly low 2.1% as AS’s lead-out to finish a rare third.

At least AS’s Tuesday lead-out, Filthy Rich, fared better, averaging 3.8% of 18-49 year-olds to win its slot.

This was partly due to TVNZ 1’s premiere of Todd Sampson’s Body Hack debuting disastrously: its 18-49 average was only 1.5% and its 25-54 average, 1.7%, allowing Filthy Rich to win in TVNZ 1’s target demo, too.

AS also is struggling in Australia, where this week’s episodes each drew fewer than 800,00 viewers (compared to The Block’s 1.6 million).

  1. My Kitchen Rules NZ is due to air on TVNZ 2 in September but we need to mix this up with a range of American, Australian and NZ entertainment series that we have not seen here before. Replace all repeats from our primetime — we need police dramas, sitcoms, game shows and blockbuster movies.

  2. I have no interest in Australian Survivor. The only survivor show that I watch is the US Survivor show. It is a great show and Jeff Probst is awesome.

  3. I’ve commented elsewhere on this, as I guess the audience figures don’t lie, but jeez, the sheer number of reality shows here are reaching saturation. Reality shows are the SUV of the TV world! Good post!
