Colbert to Quiz Cleese on Prime

After a three-year absence, John Cleese tonight returns to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert (Prime, 11.00) — and hopefully the host will ask him the absurdist questions he craves.

Cleese, who’s touring the US with a retrospective that includes a screening of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, recently told New York magazine he loved Q&A sessions with the audience in which the questions were disrespectful:

What I hate is getting someone from California telling me how wonderful I am or asking for advice on how to be as wonderful as I am. That’s awful. I like rude questions, like “Why can’t you stay married?” or “Why is [Michael] Palin so much funnier than you are?” It doesn’t have to be respectful. In fact, my daughter will be the questioner. She’ll be in charge of which audience inquiries are good enough because she has no respect for me at all. You see, the problem with most interviewers is they’re much too respectful.

Of Cleese’s most recent late-night talk show appearance, with Seth Meyers, The AV Club said he had “become a more lovably crotchety storyteller as he’s grown older, and his mutually affectionate chat with Meyers fairly glowed with a twinkly, mischievous warmth”.

Also on tonight’s show is former Attorney General Eric Holder while scheduled for the rest of the week are:

  • Tatiana Maslany, Former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul and Brian Huskey (11.00 Wednesday)
  • John Dickerson and Michaela Watkins (11.00 Thursday)
  • Jake Tapper, Michael Peña and a musical performance by Dua Lipa (10.30 Friday)
  • Laura Linney (12.10am Tuesday).
