Coro St Goes HD At Last

Apologies for not alerting you to this earlier but Coronation Street is now airing in HD on TV One.

The network has been broadcasting the serial in HD for the past four months — but hasn’t identified it as such in the billings it sends media.

I hadn’t noticed because I prefer to watch Coro St, as with most SD content, on a 32-inch TV rather than a larger display, to minimise resolution issues.

But last week I saw it on a 55-inch 4K TV and couldn’t get over how good it looked.

I checked with TVNZ and it turns out the cobblestones have indeed been this shiny since the new year. D’oh!

That’s the good news; the bad news for older viewers who find the post-8.30 weekend slots too late is TV One’s dropped its daytime repeats in favour of more ghastly reality fare, like Come Date With Me Australia and the soon to air Come Dine With Me Couples.

But as a spokesman points out: “Coro is available to catch up on TVNZ OnDemand, where it is consistently in the top ten highest-viewed shows each week.”

Now, if only TVNZ would capitalise on this by narrowing the gap between NZ and UK broadcasts from nearly two years to two weeks.

  1. I’ve noticed that TVNZ have stopped publishing the stats about OnDemand. Any ideas why? It used to boast about number of viewers, duration etc for both TVNZ OnDemand and OneNews OnDemand.
