Gloriavale Miniseries Online Only

Despite being one of TVNZ 2’s highest-rating drawcards, the next instalment in the Gloriavale franchise will be exclusive to TVNZ OnDemand.

Gloriavale: The Return will be available to stream from May but, unlike most on-demand content, isn’t destined for broadcasting in HD.

“It’s an OnDemand exclusive,” TVNZ publicity manager Lucy Ewen says. “Episodes will be of a shorter duration, so content made for the web.”

TVNZ 2 has screened three NZ On Air-funded primetime documentaries about the isolated West Coast religious community: Gloriavale – A World Apart, Gloriavale – Life and Death and Gloriavale – A Woman’s Place.

“All generated astounding ratings, online streams and set a benchmark in the documentary genre,” says the TVNZ press release.

“The third and final instalment went to air in August 2016, becoming the highest rating show on 2 that year.”

According to the release, Gloriavale: The Return will catch up with familiar faces, like Dove Love, Paul and Pearl, and introduce Mercy, Treasure and Blessed.

With expanding families and ever more mouths to feed, Gloriavale is constantly coming up with new business ventures. This runs from building their own beehives and constructing a honey factory; to designing and making a massive dishwasher and chip fryer.

They also make their own clothes, build their own homes and write their own music, songs and stories.

This series will also follow the social differences between this community and the rest of New Zealand, focusing on early childhood, women’s roles, censorship and governance.

Gloriavale: The Return is produced by Amanda Evans of Pacific Screen, who produced and directed all three original documentaries. Amanda’s access to this isolated community is unprecedented.

Her husband, Ivars Berzins, returns as director of photography, alongside Tony Spear, the team’s sound recordist.
