HD Heads-Up: August 23-29

All the free-to-air HD networks are pumping up their primetime line-ups in the last week of August, when TV One and TV3 will go head-to-head with NZ versions of top-rating Aussie formats.

TV One will launch its own version of My Kitchen Rules 7.30 Sunday and continue it Tuesday and Wednesday at the same hour, when it will face off against TV3’s season-three launch of The Block NZ (7.30 Tuesday-Thursday).

TV One will follow MKR’s premiere with the return of Call the Midwife and A Place to Call Home while TV3’s building “blocks” include the network HD premiere of The Change-Up on Tuesday, the HD documentary Mayday: The Passenger Who Landed a Flight on Thursday (followed by a new HD doco series, Botched Up Bodies), and the premiere of a local HD stand-up comedy special, Aotearoha: Driving Stories, in the 7 Days slot on Friday.

TV One also has new episodes of Castle from 9.30 Monday, the 7.30 premiere of animal rescue half-hour Purina Pound Pups To Dog Stars on Monday and the 8.30 Wednesday launch of Benefits Street, followed by the HD doco, Mummy’s Little Murderer, which investigates the murder of New Zealander Emily Longley in London.

It’s a sharp-looking schedule but I’m surprised the network isn’t using its version of MKR to launch Happy Valley, a crime drama that has the potential to be the next Broadchurch, rather than revive Midwife when it’s popular enough not to need such a strong lead-in.

TV2 isn’t sitting still amid this upheaval: the network’s bringing back some of its most popular shows in new slots — Cougar Town (8.00 Monday), Wentworth (8.30 Monday), Mike & Molly (7.30 Wednesday) — farewelling Resurrection (8.30 Thursday) and premiering Cosentino: The Magic, The Mystery, The Madness (7.30 Tuesday).

It also has the network HD premiere of The Hunger Games on Sunday at 8.30 to promote these newcomers and new-look, post-MKR schedule.

Other coming attractions in HD include: Defiance (TV One, 9.30 Saturday), The Rum Diary (TV3, 10.25 Saturday), Blitz (TV2, 11.05 Saturday), Carnage (TV One, 12.10am Sunday), Ondine (TV2, 12.55am Sunday),  Superdad (TV3, 9.30 Sunday), The Crazies (TV2, 11.20 Sunday) and What Happens in Vegas (TV3, 8.30 Monday).

  1. Why do the viewers always end up being the losers? Not that I watch any of those shows anyway but there must be LOTS of annoyed people around NZ right now 🙂

  2. I have to say that it is absolutely annoying that both TVNZ and TV3 have bought over the Australian TV tactic of having programmes finish at 8.35/8.40 or over run for MKRNZ and The Block NZ so viewers won’t watch content on other channels because they’ve missed the first ten minutes. We should not be emulating the stupidity that occurs in Oz. Rant over!!
