HD Heads-Up: August 4

Home and Away fans left high and dry … Homer gets his own hour … 7 Days turns seven … Brokenwood “fixed” for re-runs … Westside goes west …

Home and Away and The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon are going “on hiatus” during the Olympic Games. Because the domestic networks on which these shows air in Australia and the US are official broadcasters of Rio 2016, both series are being pre-empted. Prime will replace Fallon with its Rio coverage while TV2 will re-run double-eps of The Simpsons from 5.30-6.30. As TV2 is a week behind Channel 7 broadcasts of Home & Away, The Simpsons double-eps won’t kick in until August 15 …

With classic Simpsons airing weeknights at six from August 12, TV2 is dropping the Sunday night edition. It’s going back to the beginning — yet again — of The Middle, which has become almost as strategically important for the network as The Big Bang Theory. Unlike the remastered Two and a Half Men, however, season one of The Middle won’t be in HD. The ancient Charlie Sheen sitcom, meanwhile, is rating amazingly well at 10.30 despite having been endlessly re-run on- and off-peak …

TV3 will refresh its post-Block NZ schedule with stripped episodes of season two of Married At First Sight USA. They will air 7.30 Monday-Wednesday from August 15, the same week the network premieres in HD Hidden India (5.00 Saturdays), Rescue Dog to Super Dog (7.30 Thursdays) and Frat Boys: Inside America’s Fraternities (9.30 Thursday). It will also celebrate 7 Days’ seventh birthday with an hour-long special (9.30 Friday) …

Comings and goings: Prime will re-run The Brokenwood Mysteries 7.30 Saturdays from August 13 but for the first time will screen it in HD … Season five of TV3’s Big Angry Fish will air 5.00 Sundays from August 14 … Season two of TV One’s The Hard Stuff With Nigel Latta will screen 8.30 Tuesdays from August 16 … Ending their runs are Westside (August 14), Outback Truckers (August 16) and The New Zealand Home (August 19) …

Coming attractions in HD for the week starting August 13 include: Pocahontas (TV2, 5.25 Saturday), The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (TV3, 7.00 Saturday), The Cyberbully (TV3, 9.10 Saturday), They Came Together (TV2, 11.00 Saturday), Bubble Boy (TV2, 12.35am Sunday), Deadly Spa (TV2, 2.10am Sunday), White House Down (TV2, 8.35 Sunday), The Remaining (TV2, 12.55am Monday), The Internship (TV3, 8.30 Monday) and Die Hard (Prime, 8.30 Thursday) …

Monday’s 60 Minutes (Prime, 8.30) includes a special investigation into Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, a report on how the Mexican government is trying to save one of the world’s most endangered sea mammals, and an interview with Absolutely Fabulous duo Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley on the eve of their movie opening here …

Guesting on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon this week are: Aziz Ansari, Carla Gugino and Jeff Dye (10.30 tonight), and Miles Teller, Keri Russell and Steven Tyler (10.30 tomorrow) …
