HD Heads-Up: February 2-8

HD highlights abound in week six of the 2013 season, with TV3 overhauling its schedule, TV2 clearing the decks for a raft of premieres the following week and TV One screening in HD for the first time the IRB Sevens World Series.

The Sevens will dominate TV One’s Saturday schedule, screening from 12noon-6pm and from 6.30pm-10.30pm after kicking off live 24 hours earlier.

But what will excite HD viewers the most is TV3’s record number of 1080i series, starting with 90 minutes of The Simpsons and Family Guy on Sunday.

Mondays will boast an all-new three-hour block of HD entertainment, opening with reality newcomers Crime Exposed and Territory Cops from 7.30, and continuing with the premieres of local drama The Blue Rose at 8.30 and US spy thriller The Americans at 9.30.

NCIS and its sister show will continue to anchor Tuesdays, but with an hour of HD comedy — Modern Family and Go On — as their lead-in.

Sons of Anarchy returns for its fifth season at 9.30 on Wednesday, after the HD premiere of Nigel Marvin’s wildlife hour, Wild Colombia.

And on Friday, TV3 will sandwich new HD eps of The Graham Norton Show, with comedy double-bills: Modern Family and Kiwi newcomer Sunny Skies from 7.30, and 7 Days and its spin-off, The Radio, from 9.30.

The latter will be in SD, as will the week’s other two new series: season two of World’s Deadliest Roads (7.30 Wednesday) and season 10 of Grand Designs (7.30 Thursday).

TV3 can’t confirm when Grand Designs will switch to HD but it looks as though the series, which is up to its 12th season in the UK, made the transition with season 11.

The same week TV3 and TV2 will premiere two Sunday movies in HD: respectively, The Dilemma at 8.30 and Tangled at 7.00.

It also will be a big week for double-bill double-bangers.

TV2 will end its season-five re-runs of The Big Bang Theory with Monday and Wednesday double-eps, and a two-hour season finale of Grey’s Anatomy.

TV3 will wind up season-one re-runs of The Good Wife with a double-ep on Sunday, and screen a double-ep of CSI: New York on Saturday, ahead of a repeat of the 2010 HD movie, A Model Daughter.

TV2 also will screen 7.30 Tuesday part one of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows while TV One’s Sunday night true-Aussie crime dramatisation, The Great Mint Swindle, stars Kiwi Grant Bowler.
