HD Heads-Up: February 3

TV3 is pre-empting Lip Sync Battle, The Graham Norton Show and Live at the Apollo on Friday to screen the TV musical Grease: Live! within days of the US, where it drew a “massive” 18.6 million viewers. Said The Hollywood Reporter of the three-hour special: “This production wasn’t about hitting notes or taking breath, but rather about making things breathtaking. And time after time, Grease: Live succeeded.” Deadline Hollywood reckoned “some kind of history was made with this production, a combination of technical dazzlement and perfect casting that made the innocuous material seem practically revolutionary.” Variety said it won’t make you forget the 1978 movie but, “All in all, Grease: Live! got most of the big things right — the colourful aesthetic, the rip-roaring big dance numbers, the goofy, careening energy. If the central romance was a snooze, well, never mind — that raucous hand jive will linger in the memory much longer” …

The Secret Life of Twins will be revealed in an ITV documentary of the same name that TV1 will premiere on February 16. According to the publicity, it “opens the doors into this fascinating world, by meeting different pairs of extraordinary identical twins, from those separated at birth who are so similar that they have an uncanny bond, to those with such surprising differences they raise profound questions about the nature of twins.” The Huffington Post said several sets of twins describe “life with a mirror image … in a series of moving, thrilling, sometimes chilling, anecdotes of their similarities” …

Variety reports the creative team behind SoHo’s 10-part series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, which premieres 8.30 tonight and earned rave reviews from critics, is confident they’ve still got surprises in store for viewers. “Our position with the show was, we were interested in telling you things you didn’t know,” executive producer Ryan Murphy told the trade paper. “Because we all know that case has been such a part of the culture and has been for so long” …

  1. Wow, fantastic news TV3!! Thought TVNZ was going to pick this up. Hopefully the audio problems the show suffered from in the States won’t be an issue here.

  2. It’s great about Grease: Live but I notice it hasn’t been changed on MySky, oh well it’s only Wednesday. 🙂

  3. TV3 only announced the programming change this morning, so it may take a few hours for the broadcaster to flag the pre-emption on EPGs. But I agree — it should have been sorted by now.

  4. I notice Grease: Live! is now on MySky, just thought I would mention 🙂

  5. Not showing up on the TiVo EPG..
