HD Heads-Up: January 17-23

The latest David Attenborough series to air here in HD also will be released next month on Blu-ray.

Micro Monsters, which will premiere on January 18 (TV1, 7.30), is an up close-and-personal view of insects that was shot in 3D for Sky 1.

But, as happened with Attenborough’s Kingdom of the Planetsonly the 2D version is being offered here on disc; both series, along with Galapagos, can be bought on 3D Blu-ray from the UK (as can Attenborough’s Natural Museum Alive, which also lands here next month on 2D Blu-ray).

London’s Time Out warned Micro Monsters’s “bug-on-bug tussles [are] not for the fainthearted” while the Daily Mail acclaimed it as “a stunning new series … prepared to be shocked”.

Also new in HD for the week starting January 17 is Mystery Girls, which reunites Beverly Hills 90210’s Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling as ex-TV detectives investigating real-life crimes.

The Hollywood Reporter dubbed the comedy “silly and harmless fun” and Entertainment Weekly acknowledged “there is some joy in seeing Spelling and Garth together again, and in some decent bitchy lines (Garth to Spelling: ‘I see you’re still using more makeup than a geisha’).

“But the only mystery worth investigating is why the series isn’t better.”

TV2 agrees and appears to be following the New York Times’ verdict (“painfully unfunny“) in its 10.20am Sunday scheduling of Mystery Girls.

Other HD highlights include the season six premiere of The Middle (TV2, 7.30 Monday) and the documentary, Margaret Thatcher: The Woman Who Changed Britain (TV1, 12.05am Wednesday), which aired nearly two years ago in the UK.

Headlining the week’s coming attractions in HD is the network premiere of Lincoln (TV3, 9.10 Saturday) but there’s not a lot else of note:

  • Free Willy (TV2, 5.00 Saturday)
  • Night at the Museum 2 (TV3, 7.00 Saturday)
  • The Cable Guy (TV2, 8.50 Saturday)

  1. I have got the 3D versions all of these David Attenborough documentaries and the 3D quality is stunning on all of them. Highly recommended if you are into 3D.
