HD Heads-Up: January 26

Expect TV2 to have completed its new-season roll-out by the third week in February. That’s when it will replace its summer Monday movie slot with local drama Filthy Rich, which will also air 8.30 Tuesdays, and new episodes of The Walking Dead (9.30 Mondays), with the latter again airing within a day of its US broadcast. How to Get Away With Murder is destined for 9.30 Tuesdays six months after its US premiere while another favourite gathering dust, The Simpsons, must be a sitter for 7.00 Sundays or at 7.30 following the return of The Muppets (if TV2 still has enough faith in the reboot after disappointing initial ratings) …

TV2 also is refreshing its weekday evening line-up, starting February 9 when Friends will move to 5.00 to make way for the hour-long season premiere of Home and Away. From February 10, TV2 will re-run The Middle at 6.00, continuing the season one eps that it’s been airing 6.30 Sundays …

February 10 also is when TV2 will resurrect its Wednesday comedy block with the long-awaited Big Bang Theory ep, in which Sheldon and Amy have sex for the first time. It will screen as part of a Big Bang hour, with season six re-runs at 8.00 and new eps at 8.30 ahead of the return of Mom. Still no sign of 2 Broke Girls, which I expected to air at 9.00 and Mom at 8.00 …

Leading off the block at 7.30 will be the premiere of Dr Ken, one of the worst reviewed newcomers of the 2015/16 season in the US. About an Asian-American physician who communicates poorly, it was described as a “tough watch” by the New York Times (“relentlessly mediocre and formulaic”), “uncomfortable, unfunny, and forgettable” by The Atlantic, and “about as bland as the decor in a hospital waiting room” by Variety. Even so, the first few eps rated well enough in the US for ABC to order a full season …

Also new to TV2 in the week starting February 6 will be reality newcomers SAS: Who Dares Win (9.30 Wednesday), which will screen in SD, and Surveillance Dashcam (8.00 Thursday), which will tailgate the return of Police Ten 7. Surveillance Dashcam is an Australian series that the Sydney Morning Herald dubbed “the latest great leap forward in the quest to find a TV programme that can be produced for less than the price of a packet of Tim Tams” — but acknowledged it wasn’t a one-trick pony: “The crashes are leavened by a dash of road rage, so you get a nice mix of cars flipping and spinning out, and people punching other people’s car windows. It might not be a ratings smash, but it’s so cheap dashcams will probably be 50% of local content in a year’s time” …

To give its new line-up as much as exposure as possible, TV2 will screen the network movie premiere of The Lego Movie at 7.00 on February 7 ahead of two others:  Someone Marry Barry (9.00) and Open Grave (10.40 Sunday). The rest of its HD coming attractions that week will include Herbie: Fully Loaded (7.00 Saturday), Zoolander (8.00 Saturday), The Hot Chick (10.35 Saturday), A Good Old Fashioned Orgy (12.35am Sunday), The Losers (2.20am Sunday), Just Go With It (8.30 Monday) and Charlie’s Angels (8.30 Friday).
