HD Heads-Up: June 22

The latest seasons of Mr. Robot and Suits will stream on Lightbox from July 14. Indiewire reports the former has experimented with “new methods to amp up its sophomore season”, which will include virtual reality footage. However, Lightbox hasn’t licensed Mr. Robot_dec0d3d.doc, a one-hour special that explores the show’s authenticity and societal impact (it aired Monday in the US). Meanwhile, the season-six premiere of legal drama Suits coincides with all the previous seasons being released here on Blu-ray. They go on sale on July 13 …

Free-to-air fans of Prime’s riveting The People vs OJ Simpson: American Crime Story will have to wait longer than usual to see the denouement: its June 28 broadcast has been pushed backed from 9.35 to 10.20 to accommodate the Prime Rocks special, Mr. Blue Sky – The Story of Jeff Lynne & ELO, which will run longer than programmers first thought …

Even if you’ve seen The People vs OJ, you should still tune into OJ: Made in America, reckons NZ Herald reviewer Duncan Grieve. He dubbed the five-part ESPN documentary series “irresistibly compelling” while US critics have hailed it as “a masterwork of scholarship, journalism and cinematic art“. If you missed last night’s premiere, set MySky for tonight’s 10.30 repeat …

On tonight’s Back Benches (Prime, 10.30), representatives from the youth wings of the National, Labour, NZ First, Green and Maori parties will debate student debt, cyberbullying and paid parental leave …

Tonight’s State of Origin game on Prime is pre-empting The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon but the network will screen it instead of a re-run in the show’s 2pm Thursday slot. It features guests Julia Louis-Dreyfus, David Feherty and Kevin Delaney while appearing on tomorrow night’s show are Gordon Ramsay, Elle Fanning and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis…

Grey’s Anatomy has overtaken Shortland Street to be the most streamed series on TVNZ OnDemand. It recorded more than 37,000 streams an episode in May while Quantico was the month’s fifth-most streamed series, with more than 150,000 over the first six episodes. Whereas Quantico’s streams were post-broadcast catch-ups, Gray’s Anatomy’s were of “watch first” episodes fast-tracked from the US. Two other “watch first” series also figured in the top 10 — The Catch and The Flash — along with Home and AwayThe Big Bang TheoryCoronation Street, Blindspot and A Place to Call Home

  1. I wonder how the new season of Grey’s Anatomy has fared when played on broadcast TV? Will it have pulled more than 37,000 viewers or is it now wasted in primetime? And would it have had a higher total viewership if broadcast first and ondemand later?

  2. Just a footnote, Scream Queens has found a NZ streamer with Lightbox streaming season 1 from July 1st.

  3. I have got Lightbox working better with my Chromecast on my TV so I have been watching more shows off Lightbox recently and really like The Path, it’s excellent especially if you like shows about a cult 🙂

  4. That’s great news Leo, I was wondering when or if Scream Queens will screen in New Zealand, looks like a good show 🙂
