HD Heads-Up: June 23

TV One is about to give its schedule a mid-winter makeover, with the premieres of two NZ documentary series: The New Zealand Home (7.30 Fridays from July 8) and Inconceivable (8.30 Tuesdays from July 5). The former unites Our First Home’s Goran Paladin and architect Ken Croon (above) “on a quest to discover the quintessential New Zealand home”; the latter follows eight Kiwi couples over two years as they try to conceive. Also new that week are the premiere of Roots (8.30, July 3) and the return of Undercover Boss USA (9.30, July 5) while ending their runs are Rapid Response and Criminal Minds

Prime also sports a fresh look with the return of Bones and Sleepy Hollow as a “thank God it’s Friday” combo from July 8. This will mark the first time Sleepy Hollow has aired in HD here. Also new in HD that week will be I Am Johnny Cash, a two-hour Prime Rocks tribute that features “cinematically filmed” original interviews with his family and friends as well as the likes of Sheryl Crow, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard …

TV3 will premiere Atlantic: Wildest Ocean On Earth in HD on July 2 at 4.55pm. “The whole thing is as spectacular and as beautiful as you would expect from a big one from the BBC Natural History Unit,” said The Guardian. The three-part series, which you would normally expect to find on TV One or Prime, explores the natural forces that underpin life in the Atlantic, from the world’s most powerful currents and ferocious hurricanes to vast chains of undersea volcanoes …

TV3 will screen two network movie premieres in the week starting July 2: A Million Ways To Die In The West (9.00 Saturday) and Lucy (8.30 Monday). Other HD coming attractions that week include: Hunchback of Notre Dame (TV2, 5.10 Saturday), 17 Again (TV2, 7.00 Saturday), Ghostbusters (TV3, 7.00 Saturday), Fun With Dick and Jane (TV2, 9.00 Saturday), June (TV2, 10.45 Sunday) and Resident Evil: Extinction (TV2, 12.25am Monday) …

Comings and goings: HBO has axed Vinyl after previously renewing the low-rating rock music drama for a second season … The Good Wife’s Archie Panjabi will join Blindspot for its second season (the first ends 8.30 Sunday on TV One) … Maggie Geha (Ted 2) will take over the role of Ivy Pepper when the character “sprouts into” Poison Ivy in season three of Gotham … Ex-Wonder Woman Lynda Carter will play the President in the next season of Supergirl

  1. It’s great to see Lucy is coming up soon, I like that movie but mostly because of Scarlett Johansson, she’s amazing 🙂
