HD Heads-Up: March 16 – 22

➢➢ Modern Dinosaurs (Prime, 7.30 Sundays from March 17) is a series from Making Movies (New Zealand From Above, Beneath New Zealand) in which kiwi creatures get top billing. The first episode covers the tuatara and the second, the kiwi. Reads the blurb: “How did the tuatara survive when most dinosaurs were driven to oblivion? Scientists venture to some of the most remote parts of the country in an attempt to track down tuatara’s ancient competition.” The season premiere also contrasts the tuatara with Australia’s saltwater crocodile. Other episodes focus on the kakapo, how NZ wildlife has adjusted to one of the most geologically unstable places on Earth, and what lives in our oceans. The Timothy Balme-narrated series was made in 2017 and went to air on German TV this time last year …

➢➢ TVNZ 2 will launch Whiskey Cavalier as a double-episode in its Sunday Premiere Movie slot on March 17 and continue it as a weekly series 9.30 Wednesdays. The spy romp about an odd-couple, globe-trotting CIA-FBI duo already can be streamed OnDemand. Forbes dubbed it “the best new network television series this season” and Paste magazine reckons it and Three’s Monday night hit, The Rookie, “might be the future of the network procedural … By taking the most trope-y elements of other mainstay genres and layering them over their own barely-tweaked procedural formulas, these network rookies have managed to find a kind of novelty that is too fresh to feel overly predictable, but familiar enough to feel snuggie-like” …

➢➢ Mom (TVNZ 2, 7.30 Mondays from March 11) is part of TVNZ 2’s band-aid fix strategy after quickly yanking Changing Rooms Australia from Sunday and Monday nights. It was going to replace the ratings disaster with Travel Guides from March 11 but has now opted to double-bill season six episodes of Mom, which last month was renewed for two more seasons …

➢➢ Graham Norton will go behind the scenes of his talk show to reveal the secrets of telling a good story on Graham Norton’s Good Story Guide (Three, 8.00 March 22), complete with insights from guests Rob Brydon and Miriam Margolyes …

➢➢ Ending their runs in the week starting March 16 will be Following Twain With Oscar Kightley, America’s Got Talent: The Champions, The Great Australian Bake Off and We Love Your Garden
