HD Heads-Up: March 24

Next month Prime will premiere two NZ documentaries in HD: Decades in Colour and Peak Antibiotics. The former (8.30 Sundays from April 3), which Judy Bailey will present, revisits NZ in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. The publicity dubs it a “living snapshot” rather than a history lesson, so expect more home-movie nostalgia than socio-political analysis. Peak Antibiotics (April 4, 8.30) investigates the rise of antibiotic resistance and its consequences …

Other HD documentaries to watch for are TV One’s Louis Theroux: Transgender Kids (April 5, 9.30) and Cold Fear: Gay Life in Russia (April 6, 12.10am). “Entirely free of exploitation or sensationalism, this was subtle film-mking which presented family dilemmas, not ‘issues’,” The Telegraph said of the former while The Independent said “it was joyful to see so many supportive and open-minded mums and dads in action”. Cold Fear is a “bleak and brutal depiction” of homosexual hatred in Russia that can be viewed in SD on YouTube  …

Inexplicably, TV3 has dropped Pussies Galore from the title of its HD doco, Love Me, Love My Cats (April 4, 9.30 Monday). “Meet the cattiest of all the cat ladies, as Channel 5 hunts down people so feline-obsessed they’re willing to give up their houses to their dogs,” said The Guardian. Also on show are a charity shop manager in Lancashire with 40 cat-related tattoos and the owner of Newcastle’s first cat cafe …
