HD Heads-Up: March 28-April 3

On the eve of the Blu-ray release of the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music, TV1 will screen a “live” performance of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical in HD on Good Friday.

The Sound of Music Live! will air commercial-free from 7.00-9.15, pre-empting Seven Sharp and Location Location.

It screened four months ago on NBC and stars American Idol winner Carrie Underwood in Julie Andrews’ singing governess and True Blood’s Stephen Moyer as Captain Von Trapp.

“The American Idol winner doesn’t have any theatre experience, and she went on to do a lot better in the singing department than in the acting one,” the New York Post reports.

“If someone should be banned from singing ever again, it should be Moyer.”

“The supporting cast was strong,” The Hollywood Reporter acknowledged.

“And yet, without Underwood and Moyer selling us on this legendary love story, The Sound of Music Live plays like very expensive karaoke.”

“Nobody could solve the problem of this Maria,” quipped the New York Times, who said Underwood “seemed to be sleepwalking” in “a live performance of a legendary musical that felt muted and a little sad”.

But at least TV1’s programming of The Sound of Music Live! acknowledges April 3 is not just another Friday.

For TV3, it’s largely primetime business as usual, with just a re-run of Road Cops replacing Campbell Live, while TV2 has wall-to-wall movies: Chicken Little (5.35), Richie Rich (7.00), After Earth (8.35) and That’s My Boy (10.15).

All but Richie Rich will be in HD and After Earth is a network premiere, as is TV2’s Easter eve movie, Jack the Giant Slayer (7.30), which pre-empts Thursday’s Police Ten 7, Highway Patrol and The Flash.

Overnight Thursday TV2 will run a marathon of season four Big Bang Theory repeats while TV3 will re-run the HD movies The Soloist (2.15am Friday) and Taken From Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story (4.45am Friday).

Other coming attractions in HD include the network premieres of Beautiful Creatures (TV2, 11.15 Saturday) and Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (TV2, 3.45am Sunday), and re-runs of Wall-E (TV2, 6.35 Saturday), Ratatouille (TV2, 6.25 Sunday), Chronicle (TV3, 9.00 Sunday), The Roommate (TV2, 10.35 Sunday) and Rambo (TV3, 8.40 Thursday).

Also of note for the week starting March 28:

  • The movie-length season finale of The Walking Dead (TV2, 9.30 Monday)
  • Likely series finales of Along for the Ride (TV1, 7.00 Saturday), and Agent Carter (TV2, 10.30 Wednesday)
  • A double-episode of Home and Away on Monday (TV2, 5.00) to make up for the Friday episode’s pre-emption
  • A 3 News Special on the Northland by-election that will pre-empt Chicago PD (TV3, 9.30 Saturday).
