HD Heads-Up: May 24-30

If you forgot to PVR Sunday’s premiere of Broadchurch in HD, TV One will re-run it and this weekend’s episode on a catch-up double-bill on May 24.

It’s a strategy networks use to maximise sampling of signature shows, especially one with the prestige and break-out popularity of this front-runnner for the best drama series (competing against Top of the Lake) and best actress (Olivia Colman) prizes at Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards ceremony.

Surprisingly, Sky’s UKTV isn’t screening the presentation, even though the satcaster aired the film awards earlier this year and many of the nominees are UKTV fixtures.

Even more peculiarly, Roadshow Entertainment is not distributing Broadchurch on Blu-ray.

It will release the series only on DVD in July, despite its availability on Blu-ray in the UK (“the 1080/50i  transfer is spotless“).

The omission caps a disappointing week for HD viewers, with the latest seasons of Californication and Nurse Jackie tonight starting SD runs on Four after originally airing in HD on TV3 — and only 24 hours after another HD series washed up on the channel in SD, The Last Resort.

Even more frustrating is the rescheduling of How I Met Your Mother’s final season from HD in TV3 back to SD on Four (7.30 Mondays), with this week’s launch of House Rules preempting it and Friday night stablemate The Simpsons (which used to air here within days of the US).

At least re-runs of The Simpsons’ 20th season will continue to screen in HD 5.30 Sundays from this weekend but that’s no compensation for missing out on same week-as-the-States experiences as this month’s Lego episode or what awaits next season.

Meanwhile, here’s why CBS isn’t preceding with its anticipated Mother spin-off, How I Met Your Dad.

It seems “elements on the pilot” didn’t work out but expect producer 20th Century Fox TV to shop it to other networks.

In other HD programming news of note for the week starting May 24:

  • The 200th episode of Grey’s Anatomy screens on Monday (TV2, 9.40)
  • Said the AV Club of Wednesday’s Valentine’s Day episode of The Big Bang Theory (TV2, 8.45): “The impossible happens, turning everything we know about this show upside down”
  • TV2’s Monday Mornings, which was yanked from primetime last year after only three weeks, resumes from episode four in an 11.35 Monday slot on May 26
  • Mr Selfridge has its season finale on Sunday (TV One, 9.30) and Citizen Khan’s on Thursday (TV One, 10.10)
  • Movies include The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (TV3, 8.30 Saturday), Our Idiot Brother (TV2, 8.45 Saturday), Two Lovers (TV2, 10.30 Saturday), For Coloured Girls (TV2, 12.35am Sunday), Undisputed III: Redemption (TV2, 12.35am Monday), Taken (TV3, 8.30 Monday) and I Am Number Four (TV2, 9.10 Friday)
  • Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy guest on Friday’s The Graham Norton Show (TV3, 8.35 Friday).

  1. I’m disappointed in TV3, all they seem to care about are boring reality TV shows … NOT happy 🙁

  2. I disagree. I prefer TV3 over TV1 or TV2. A number of good shows in HD that I enjoy, including The Blacklist, Hawaii Five-O, CSI, Graham Norton Show and The Simpsons.

  3. Nonplussed with Broadchurch, it’s ok but nothing spectacular, certainly not as engrossing as other TV drama like Top of the Lake or True Detective, hard to see what all the fuss was about. The UK BD look ok but is overly bright with washed-out colours. Sound is only 2.0.

  4. Actually I love TV3 but I do think TV3 are going overboard with too many reality TV shows 🙂

  5. How comes Australian shows take over the primetime slots, with The Voice Aus and House Rules Aus. I mean, what has happened to New Zealand shows? The X Factor NZ shouldn’t of been put on hold. Man, local shows are being put out to the trash. Can’t wait for The Block NZ, love it!

  6. thx1138: I think that you should give Broadchurch another chance. Unless the 1st episode of a new TV series is terrible, I will normally watch at least the 1st three episodes of a series before deciding whether or not I will continue to watch the series.

  7. What happened to The Big Bang Theory on Wednesday? The series is still showing in the US until May 15.

  8. TV2 pre-empted it for an extra-long ep of My Kitchen Rules.

  9. I have abandoned Agents of SHIELD for Broadchurch. Blacklist still holds my interest.

  10. Mark: I’ve seen the whole series. It’s good but not the most compelling TV I’ve seen this year.

  11. I think X Factor NZ will be back next year … I was told to watch this space 🙂

  12. I will always watch Hawaii Five-O on Sunday nites.

  13. Thanks thx1138. I will continue to watch this series to the end. Season 2 of Broadchurch has been confirmed.

  14. Considering the bomb that was The Great Food Race, Trevor, I think X Factor NZ will be back next year, too. TV3 does need a dependable franchise during the first half of the year to shore up ratings. I wonder if TVNZ will launch a local version of The Voic>e next year if MKR NZ fails to fire later this year.

  15. I record Hawaii Five-O and watch it on Monday night with my teenage son and daughter, as 10.30 on a Sunday night is a bit late for them with school the next day.

  16. TV2 needs to up their stakes. I know that Survivor NZ is still under wraps but what about an entertaining new game show until then?
