HD Heads-Up: May 31

➢ The Big Three HD networks are refreshing their primetime line-ups in the week starting June 9. TVNZ 1 will screen Coronation Street 9.30 Monday-Friday to launch its audacious catch-up gambit. It will be preceded by a two-hour compilation of 18 months’ worth of storylines (8.30 Sunday) and narrow the gap between NZ and UK broadcasts to an unprecedented week or so. The strategy should deliver Coro its best ratings in year as viewers respond to its topicality and improved scheduling (shifting the Saturday broadcast to Wednesday already has lifted its viewership) …

➢ TVNZ 1 will also premiere I Am (8.30 Tuesday), in which Kiwis reveal their struggles with life-changing adversity, and season 10 of MasterChef Australia (7.30 Thursdays and Fridays) while TVNZ 2 will replace top-rating My Kitchen Rules with Heartbreak Island (7.30 Monday-Wednesday) …

Heartbreak Island is a local variation on Love Island, in which “a group of sexy singles take up residence on a tropical Fijian island in the hope of finding love”. As well as a 7.30 strip, there will be a 9.30 Friday “uncut” catch-up version. Meanwhile, TVNZ OnDemand this week started streaming Love Island Australia

➢ Monday’s Heartbreak Island will be matched with newcomer First Dates Hotel, which is set in a south of France boutique hotel. The Guardian said it takes “all the usual trappings of the First Dates experience – lovelorn singles, friendly bartender, chirpy voiceover – and checks them into a 13th-century castle in Provence, where guests are given 48 hours to find love before they’re forced to pack their bags.” It aired last year in the UK and earlier this year Channel 4 screened a sequel set in Italy …

➢ Three will revamp Wednesdays with the fast-tracking of Buying Blind and the return of NCIS: LA and Hawaii Five-O. Buying Blind is the latest twist on real estate formats, with one Australian property website dubbing it “Married at First Sight for property … The show features buyers who hand over their life-savings to others to secure their home. The show’s moment of truth comes when the family must decide whether to grant the experts power of attorney over their life-savings to buy a house on their behalf” …

NCIS: LA will resume from episode nine of season five and H5O from episode 21 of season six. Fans of the latter will be delighted that Three still has faith in the series after its extended primetime run last year didn’t deliver the ratings the network would have hoped. Because of the length of BB, it will screen later, at 9.55 instead of 9.30. But if the Aussie show can cash in on the popularity of the Block-buster genre, H5O may at last find its ratings sea legs …

➢ Also new for the week starting June 9 will be Turkey With Simon Reeve (Prime, 7.30 Sunday), Serial Killer With Piers Morgan (Three, 9.30 Monday), The Mick (TVNZ 2, 9.00 Wednesday) and The Undateables (TVNZ 2, 8.30 Thursday) while ending their runs will be Top Gear, Superior Donuts, This Is Us and Funny Girls

➢ Usain Bolt, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Saunders, Beattie Edmondson, Rob Brydon and Florence and the Machine will guest on June 15’s The Graham Norton Show (Three, 8.00) …

➢ Tuesday’s 20/20 (TVNZ 1, 9.30) interviews Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who was convicted of murdering her mother, and her ex-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, who was also accused of first-degree murder …

➢ Unlucky number: TVNZ 2 is replacing its previously scheduled 9.00 Saturday movie, Ocean’s Thirteen, with The Lone Ranger. The 11th hour change is due to Prime having licensed the rights for the sequel’s June 11 transmission. The licensing screw-up follows TVNZ 2 repeating the first two Ocean movies on the eve of Ocean’s Eight opening in cinemas on June 7 …

➢ Network movie premieres for the week starting June 9 range range from The Nice Guys (TVNZ 2, 8.30 Sunday) and Inside Llewyn Davis (Maori TV, 8.30 Sunday) to the Rachel Hunter obscurity, Her Infidelity (TVNZ 2, 12.55am Sunday). Other HD coming attractions include:
