HD Heads-Up: November 24

Whodunit doco for Serial buffs … Oscar-winning Amy rocks …

Prime will premiere one of the best fly-on-the-beat documentaries in years, The Murder Detectives (8.35 Fridays from December 9). The Guardian likened the observational Channel 4 series to the Serial podcast and hailed it “as gripping and moving as any drama … [it] had no sexy pathologists or troubled backstories, but was absolutely fascinating.” The Telegraph thought it “an eye-opening insight into the fragility of life, the realities of police work and the messy randomness of crime” …

The Telegraph reports it was filmed over 18 months and followed the investigation into the fatal stabbing of 19-year-old Nicholas Robinson in Bristol in March 2014, tracing the progress of the case from seemingly motiveless attack to trial verdict. But unlike Prime, Channel 4 aired the series across three consecutive nights: “This is immersive ‘event television’ – the first episode was so gripping, I frequently thought I was watching a drama, rather than a documentary” …

Nothing is left out – from taping up the scene and collecting evidence, to liaising with Nicholas’s family, who are wretched with grief, and narrowing down suspects,” the Mirror says. “Not even the victim’s devastating call to 999, which will leave a knot in your stomach” …

There’s more good news for whodunit fans: Prime will air a double episode of Silent Witness on December 3 following the SD resumption of New Tricks. And ahead of its HD premiere of The White Princess, Prime will re-run in SD The White Queen (8.30 Wednesdays from December 7) …

TV3 is beefing up its HD movies slate for the week starting December 3. It will premiere Dracula Untold (9.05 Saturday) and repeat Zookeeper (Saturday), Epic (7.00 Sunday), Enough Said (11.05 Sunday), The Change-Up (8.30 Wednesday) and The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 (8.30 Thursday). And there will be another SVU/Chicago PD crossover on Tuesday at 8.30. (Incidentally, it slipped my notice but TV3 has quietly started to play new eps of superior Canadian detective drama Motive late-night Saturdays) …

The pick of the HD movies that week will be Prime’s premiere of the Oscar-winning Amy Winehouse doco, Amy, which will air 8.30 Thursday in the Prime Rocks slot. The same week Poldark will end its second season on Prime and the channel will launch the Maori myths drama Tatau (10.30 Saturday) …

Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, Jamie Oliver and Emeli Sandé will guest on the December 9 broadcast of The Graham Norton Show (TV3, 9.30) …

  1. Yeah, great. Replay old movies at the expense of Hawaii Five-0 again as we slip further and further behind *sigh* I guess we’ll be waiting until next year sometime for it to come back after they’ve found something suitable to put in before it. Uggg. I am not a patient person when it comes to Five-0.
