HD Heads-Up: October 10 – 16

TV2 will use the blockbuster network premieres of Planes and Jack Reacher to complete a spring season roll-out it hopes will rule primetime.

They will screen as a Sunday double-bill on October 11, where they will be used to promote a new-look line-up headed by My Kitchen Rules NZ.

Last year MKRNZ screened to unremarkable ratings on TV1; this year it’s switching channels to maximise the following of the Aussie original on TV2 and to topple TV3’s The Block NZ: Villa Wars.

The same week The Walking Dead will return for its sixth season (9.40 Mondays) only hours after its US telecast while new to TV1 will be another run of Highway Cops (7.30 Tuesday) and the premiere of The DNA Detectives (8.30 Wednesday), in which Rocky Horror Show creator Richard O’Brien helps 12 local celebrities exhume family histories.

New to TV3 will be the documentary Born in the Wrong Body: My Transgender Kid (9.30 Thursday) and the return of Jono and Ben (7.30 Friday) ahead of Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway and Sir Kenneth Branagh guesting on The Graham Norton Show.

TV3’s burying its sole network movie premiere, the excellent Mr Pip, late-night Sunday, while TV2 is deservedly dumping another of its HD movie premieres, Sugar Daddies, overnight on Saturday, following re-runs of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (7.00 Saturday) and Youth in Revolt (2am Sunday).

Also being dusted off for yet another re-run is The 40 Year Old Virgin (TV3, 8.55 Saturday).
