HD Heads-Up: October 18-24

Network movie premieres in HD for the week starting October 18 are limited to the Temuera Morrison adventure Tracker (TV One, 10.30 Saturday), after his variety show Happy Hour, and the musical comedy Pitch Perfect (TV3, 8.05 Sunday), starring Super Fun Night’s Rebel Wilson.

There’s little to keep track of plot-wise in Tracker, a visually spectacular NZ-UK co-production about a fugitive Maori whaler (Morrison) who bonds with his haunted Boer tracker (Ray Winstone).

It’s hampered by hackneyed writing, continuity goofs and a clumsy twist but is worth seeing just for the splendour of the landscapes (especially in HD) and wondering what might have been.

Pitch Perfect essentially is the West Side Story of a cappella arch rivalries — boy and girl bands compete in a university tournament — and is surprisingly surefooted, foot-stomping fun.

Other coming attractions in HD include: 10 Things I Hate About You (TV2, 7.00 Saturday), Goon (TV2, 10.40 Saturday), Leaves of Grass (TV2, 12.30am Sunday), Appaloosa (2.35am Sunday), Mars Needs Moms (TV2, 6.45 Sunday) and Lethal Weapon 4 (TV2 9.30 Friday).

In other comings and goings:

  • Mistresses returns for its second season on Tuesday (TV2, 10.35)
  • TV2 resumes re-runs of The Middle 6.20 Sunday, as the lead-in to the family movie, and 8.00 Wednesday, replacing Undateable, which is being pulled mid-season
  • A repeat of The Big Bang Theory pre-empts Shortland Street on the eve of Labour Weekend (TV2, 7.00 Friday)
  • John Cleese, Taylor Swift and Neil Diamond guest on Friday’s The Graham Norton Show (TV3, 8.40)
  • A Gifted Man, a kind of Ghost Whisperer meets Marcus Welby MD that first aired in SD on Four, re-runs in HD on TV3 from 1.10am Friday.

  1. YAY, I love Pitch Perfect, apart from a couple of yucky scenes 🙂
