HD Heads-Up: October 25-31

Among the raft of TV One series ending their runs in the week starting October 25 is A Place to Call Home.

But what was meant to be have been the series final now looks like being just the end of another season.

Channel Seven axed the 1950s family drama because viewership was skewing too old but the Sydney Morning Herald reports pay platform Foxtel is poised to announce it has commissioned a third season.

That’s good news for TV One, as even in a 9.30 Sunday slot the series has rated strongly off the back of Call the Midwife (which also ends the same night).

It seems that pivotal to Foxtel’s decision were “Save A Place to Call Home” campaigns resonating here and in the US, UK, Brazil, Germany, Israel, the Netherlands, Canada and India.

The SMH says Foxtel’s pick-up is part of a growing trend in the international TV market in which pay and digital broadcasters have secured popular programmes discarded by free-to-air networks, with others including Arrested Development, Community and Ripper Street.

Another Aussie series that flopped on TV One, Doctor Blake Mysteries, returns for new episodes in a late-night slot (10.30 Saturday) while exiting are My Kitchen Rules NZPurina Pound Pups to Dog StarsCoverband and Last Tango in Halifax.

TV2 farewells Ground Floor in a double episode, Shameless and Don’t Trust Andrew Mayne.

Heading the week’s network movie premieres in HD are The Five-Year Engagement (TV3, 8.30 Monday) and Dark Shadows (TV2, 9.30 Friday).

Other coming attractions in HD include: Love Wrecked (TV2, 7.00 Saturday), Keeping the Faith (TV2, 8.45 Saturday), Public Enemies (TV3, 10.25 Saturday), Easy Virtue (TV One, 11.40 Saturday), Please Give (TV2, 1.45am Sunday), Country Strong (TV2, 3.30am Sunday), Toy Story 3 (TV2, 6.25 Sunday) and Bridesmaids (TV3, 8.30 Sunday).

Meanwhile, The Judge’s Robert Downey Jr and  Robert Duvall join Stephen Fry and U2 on The Graham Norton Show (TV3, 8.40 Friday).

  1. This is great news that A Place to Call Home is coming back and I look forward to hearing more from the Foxtel Upfronts about this. I see TV One are promoting Happy Valley as coming Sunday Nov 2nd, which is awesome!
