HD Heads-Up: October 6

Pukka tukka in HD … New-look Legends … TV2 pre-empts favourites …

Prime will screen in HD for the first time new seasons of University Challenge (6.00 Saturdays), Jamie and Jimmy’s Food Fight Club (7.30 Mondays) and Legends (9.50 Tuesdays). They will premiere in the week starting October 15, which is when Prime will switch MasterChef USA from 7.30 Fridays to 6.30 Saturdays. Season two of Jamie and Jimmy’s Food Fight Club will guest star Usain Bolt, Sienna Miller, Amanda Holden, Kirstie Allsopp, Chris Moyles and Jennifer Saunders. Season three, which has just gone to air in Australia, features Kate Hudson, Hugh Bonneville, Tinie Tempah and Ellie Goulding …

Sean Bean’s FBI drama Legends has been “completely re-imagined” for its second season. Reports Variety: “Having apparently recognised that Sean Bean was the programme’s singular asset, the producers have developed a new, more ambitious structure that proceeds along parallel tracks, featuring two stories, one set in present-day London and the other unfolding 15 years earlier. Watching season one will help, but isn’t a prerequisite, and the whole enterprise suddenly has the darker feel of a premium cable drama, if not-fully-realised one, as opposed to a rather tepid procedural with Bean as the identity-shifting spook” …

Comings and goings: TV2 will repeat Gloriavale: A Woman’s Place at 8.30 on October 11 because This Is Us is being pre-empted in the US the previous week … Season two of TV2’s Dr Ken will premiere on October 12 … The BBC2 natural history doco, Mountain Lions: Life on Edge, will premiere on October 16 (TV1, 4.55) … TV1 will same-week repeat Cold Feet 10.05 Sundays from October 16 … TV2 will premiere season eight of The Middle on October 18 … Prime’s The Indian Dream Hotel and The Odd Couple will end their runs on October 20 … Guesting on October 21’s Graham Norton Show will be Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams, Chris O’Dowd and Lady Gaga …

TV2 will pre-empt Shortland Street and Take Me Out on October 21 for the Labour Weekend movie, The Tuxedo. Other coming attractions in HD for the week starting October 15 include: Barnyard (TV2, 5.10 Saturday), Muppets Most Wanted (TV2, 7.00 Saturday), Deja Vu (TV2, 11.15 Saturday), Friends With Kids (TV2, 1.45am Sunday), Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (TV3, 10.30 Sunday), Haunting in Connecticut 2 (TV2, 11.25 Sunday) and Speed (Prime, 8.35 Thursday) …

Among TV2’s new-season highlights is the Kevin James comedy, Kevin Can Wait, which I previously reported would screen on Prime. Turns out that CBS Television Studios, with which Prime has an output deal, is only a co-producer — its partner is Sony Pictures, which is distributing the comedy in this part of the world …

Coming up on Prime’s The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon are: Ashton Kutcher, Issa Rae and Norah Jones (10.35 Thursday); Ben Affleck, Sarah Paulson and Green Day (11.30 Friday); and Tyler Perry, Abigail Spencer and Van Morrison (10.30 Monday) …

Monday’s 60 Minutes (Prime, 8.30) uncovers a multi-million dollar black-market trade in Papua New Guinea of historic war planes that went down defending the area from Japan during World War II. It also profiles a woman who suffers from dissociative identity disorder and shares her body with seven different personalities, including a man …
