HD Heads-Up: Superheroes Flex Primetime Muscle

TV2 will screen the network movie premiere of Iron Man 3 in HD the same week it farewells The Flash and reunites Agents of SHIELD.

Iron Man 3 will go head-to-head with TV3’s repeat of Transformers: Dark of the Moon on May 17, which will benefit from having a 90-minute “Grand Final Performance” of The X Factor NZ as its lead-in.

The Flash will end its run on May 21 ahead of the 9.30 Thursday return of SHIELD, which TV2 will resume from episode 11 of season two.

I thought SHIELD might take over Gotham’s late-night Sunday slot but TV2 appears to be reverting to movie double-bills instead.

As to what will replace The Flash, I’m betting on iZombie, a series TV2’s already tested on-demand, where it’s one of the five most-watched shows, and which has been well received critically and commercially in the US.

It would nicely continue TV2’s comic book-themed Thursdays and would be a relatively soft slot in which to launch the CW hit (which has just been renewed for a second season).

By the way, CBS has just added Supergirl to its schedule for next season, which TV2 will pick up though its output deal with Warner Bros TV.

The series stars Glee’s Melissa Benoist as the girl from Krypton who’s been living a living secret life on Earth — until, at age 24, she decides to reveal her super powers .

Meanwhile, TV3 will pre-empt Monday drama The Blacklist for The X Factor’s final results show on May 18, and will simulcast it and Sunday’s live performance on TV4 — although who would choose to view the programmes in SD over HD is beyond me.

Just as bizarre is the network’s decision to replace Hawaii Five-O on May 16 not with season five, as it originally planned, but with re-runs of Hannibal from episode two of season one.

That means H50 fans will have to wait indefinitely for S5 (TV3 has yet to schedule it) while Hannibal fans hungry for S3 first will have to endure re-runs of S1 and S2.

Unless it’s for book-keeping convenience, it’s hard to fathom why TV3 would resort to re-runs of a niche show for which it will never build an audience while alienating loyal fans by making them wait unnecessarily long for new eps (which they will be able to source online in the interim).

Another TV3 drama, State of Affairs, ends on May 17 while the season finale of a series with which it is up to date, Survivor: Worlds Apart, will screen only hours behind the US on May 22.

Fans of TV1’s The Fixer should note new episodes will air 1.55pm Saturdays from May 16 and TV3 will resume Road Cops and Gold Coast Cops as a 7.30 Tuesday double-bill on May 19.

Iron Man 3 isn't the week's only HD movie premiere. TV1 has the obscure Aussie musical comedy Goddess (10.30 Saturday) and TV2 the 2012 horror, Chernobyl Diaries (11.10 Sunday). Other coming attractions in HD include Shanghai Knights (TV2, 7.00 Saturday), Bubble Boy (TV2, 9.15 Saturday), Striptease (TV2, 10.55 Saturday), Tyler Perry's Good Deeds (TV2, 1.20am Sunday), Magic Beyond Words: The JK Rowling Story (TV2, 3.25am Sunday), Transporter 2 TV3, 8.45 Wednesday) and Enemy of the State (TV2, 8.30 Friday).

  1. Oh my God , this is wild. Is TV2 picking up from CBS Supergirl? First it was Empire, now this one. All I have to say is “oh my God” and please push for a couple more. TV2 is game, with outstanding, surprising, new entertaining series of shows. And will they all be in HD?

  2. Are you going to let TV1 and TV3 take away your viewers TV2 ? If not, do some thing about it and please succeed.
