HD Heads-Up: TV2 Plans Killer Changes

TV2 is quitting a series that’s been a drag on its Friday night ratings for new episodes of Killer Karaoke.

Season two, in which Mark McGrath takes over from Steve-O, will replace RuPaul’s Drag Race from November 6 at 9.30 in a bid to stiffen competition for TV3’s time-slot winning 7 Days.

The overhaul is part of a tune-up for the network after a startling ratings slump.

However, RuPaul’s low-rating lead-in, Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris, will continue its 8.30 season, presumably because there’s only a handful of episodes to run (NBC ordered just eight and Variety reports it’s not clear if there will be more).

Sundays on TV2 are getting a complete makeover from November 1, with the return of Thunderbirds and the series premieres of The Muppets and Supergirl.

The latter went to air this week in the US, where Advertising Age announced its debut as: “Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s the biggest premiere of the fall TV season!

“CBS’s Supergirl soared in its Monday night debut, delivering 12.9 million total viewers and averaging a 3.2 rating in the adults 18-to-49 demographic, making it the most-watched, highest-rated new show of 2015-16.”

TV2 hopes double-billing episodes of another CBS superhero, The Big Bang Theory, will put the KA-POW! back into its Wednesday night comedy block.

From November 11, the under-performing Black-Ish will be replaced by season five re-runs of TBBT ahead of the latest episode from the US.

And at 9.00 TV2 will start to catch up with US screenings of Mom (left) when it launches season three the same night — less than a week after its CBS premiere.

Meanwhile, TV2’s November 2 re-run of 2 Broke Girls is being pre-empted for a 90-minute episode of The Walking Dead and the following Monday the network’s top-rating prison drama Wentworth will end its term.

TV3’s 7 Days of Sport, which had up and down ratings during its six weeks on air, will be succeeded by the return of SVU on November 10 at 9.30, in an episode that marks star’s Mariska Hargitay’s directorial debut (s15, e8).

In an unusual programming movie, TV3 will replace its late-night Sunday movie on November 8 with the HD concert special, AC/DC: Live At River Plate, while Justin Bieber will guest on that week’s Graham Norton Show, along with Dame Maggie Smith, Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller and Cindy Crawford.

Among the HD movies lined up for the week starting November 7 are: Mean Girls (TV2, 7.00 Saturday), The Zookeeper (TV3, 7.00 Saturday), Raising Helen (TV2, 8.55 Saturday), American Reunion (TV3, 9.15 Saturday), Easy A (TV2, 11.20 Saturday), Think Like a Man (TV2, 1.15am Sunday), The Lincoln Lawyer (TV2, 3.30am Sunday), Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous (TV2, 8.30 Sunday) and Final Destination 2 (TV2, 11.50 Sunday).

  1. Saw the Supergirl pilot back in July when CBS leaked it to gauge viewer reaction. Not sure if I’ll bother.
