HD Ratings: Step Dave Steps Up

Step Dave’s Tuesday premiere was scarcely a step up in the ratings over Go Girls but helped TV2 to win the night in all but one of the key demos (adults 18-39, 18-49, 25-54, household shoppers with kids).

The first episode of the South Pacific Pictures drama averaged 6.1% – 7.3% and won the 8.30 hour except among HHS, where it tied with TV3’s NCIS (3.1% – 7.3%).

That was well down on last year’s premiere of Go Girls (9.5% – 10.6%) but bear in mind the fifth and final season went to air in late April, when viewing levels are much higher.

More telling, however, is Step Dave’s premiere was up only slightly on Girls’ series finale (5.4% – 6.6%), so will need to improve on this if it’s to fly the flag for the next era of Kiwi drama.

Viewership was stable throughout the hour and climbed in the demos that matter most to TV2, adults 18-39 and 18-49.

The night’s other newcomer, TV One’s visually dazzling Hidden Kingdoms, didn’t fare as well, averaging only 2.5% – 4.4%.

It suffered a woefully weak lead-in from Surveillance Oz (1.1% – 2.9%) and Australia’s Deadliest (1.4% – 4.1%), which were crushed by TV2’s reality newcomers Nabbed (8.1% – 12.0%) and Neighbours at War (5.4% – 9.0%) – both of which were too strong for TV3’s The Block: All Stars (5.5% – 8.2%).

TV2’s 9.30 season premiere of Revenge also nabbed the lion’s share, with 4.0% – 6.4%, compared to NCIS: LA’s 2.0% – 4.5% and Secrets of the Pickpockets’ 2.1% – 3.8%.

The peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • Adults 18-49: TV One, 2.8 rating/12.9 share; TV2, 6.5 rating/30.0 share; TV3, 5.3 rating/24.3 share
  • Adults 18-39:  TV One, 2.5 rating/13.0 share; TV2, 6.0 rating/31.5 share; TV3, 4.0 rating/21.0 share
  • Adults 25-54: TV One, 4.0 rating/16.5 share; TV2, 6.3 rating/26.3 share; TV3, 6.4 rating/26.5 share
  • HHS: TV One, 4.5 rating/17.6 share; TV2, 8.5 rating/33.3 share; TV3, 7.6 rating/29.5 share.
