HD Ratings: Blacklist Dips But Food Race Steady

TV3’s new Sunday night drama The Blacklist proved lacklustre against TV2’s network movie premiere of New Year’s Eve.

The latter started 15 minutes later and climbed as sharply in the ratings as HD rivals The Blacklist and TV One’s Offspring declined.

The Blacklist averaged 4.8% – 7.6% of the major demographics (adults 18-39, 18-49, 25-54, household shoppers with kids) compared to 7.5% – 9.6% for its premiere.

While it was most popular with TV3’s 25-54 target audience, even in this demo it took a hit, opening with 9.4% and closing with 6.3%.

Offspring held more of its 25-54 audience but still dropped over the hour from 4.9% – 3.4%.

Over all the key demos it averaged 2.0% – 5.7% compared to 3.3% – 8.1% the previous week.

New Year’s Eve averaged 5.7% – 6.6% over two-and-a-half hours, crushing 9.30 HD dramas Betrayal (1.1% – 2.4%), which won’t be able to sustain the slot for much longer on numbers this dire, and Hawaii Five-O (2.3% – 3.5%).

TV3’s The Great Food Race was steady, with the same ratings range as its premiere: 3.7% – 5.6%.

But it should have performed better given Saturday’s re-run of the premiere and much weaker movie competition on TV2, The Pirates! Band of Misfits (3.5% – 5.2%).

TV One’s MasterChef NZ averaged 4.8% – 7.2% compared to its 5.9% – 12.2% for its season premiere and held its viewership over the hour.

The good news for TV3 is TGFR built its audience post-Sunday, from 7.30-8.30.

So in the hour it was up against MasterChef, the two were neck-and-neck chop in the 18-39 demo and almost as competitive among adults 18-49.

The peak-hour channel ratings and shares were:

  • Adults 18-49: TV One, 4.7 rating/20.4 share; TV2, 4.9 rating/20.9 share; TV3, 5.0 rating/21.7 share
  • Adults 18-39:  TV One, 4.0 rating/18.1 share; TV2, 4.9 rating/22.1 share; TV3, 4.2 rating/18.9 share
  • Adults 25-54: TV One, 5.8 rating/22.0 share; TV2, 4.7 rating/17.8 share; TV3, 6.1 rating/23.4 share
  • HHS: TV One, 7.0 rating/25.5 share; TV2, 6.5 rating/23.9 share; TV3, 5.7 rating/20.8 share.
