HD Ratings: Broadchurch Broadly Appeals

TV One’s Sunday night premiere of belated British thriller Broadchurch helped the network to dominate primetime, albeit not as comprehensively as the previous week.

Broadchurch averaged 6.2% – 8.1% of the major demographics, following the launch of Topp Country, which drew 5.6% – 8.8% after Sunday’s 8.8% – 9.9%.

TV One’s line-up was especially popular with its target 25-54 audience and hurt TV3’s The Simpsons (4.1% – 4.7%), Kevin’s Grand Design (3.0% – 4.8%) and The Blacklist (4.7% – 6.4%).

TV2’s comedies also struggled, with a re-run of The Big Bang Theory averaging only 5.4% – 7.2% and new episodes of The Middle and The Neighbors 5.9% – 8.2% and 7.5% – 8.9% respectively.

This didn’t help Agents of SHIELD to rebound after last week’s low, averaging instead only 5.9% – 8.9%.

It won the 8.30 hour only among household shoppers with kids, was competitive with Broadchurch in the 18-39 demo and lost to it among adults 18-49 and 25-54.

But SHIELD lead-out The Tomorrow People (4.1% – 6.8%) reigned supreme over Mr Selfridge (2.5% – 4.4%) and Hawaii Five-O (1.8% – 2.6%).

In the battle of the late-night premium dramas, Rake (1.2% – 2.2%) easily beat House of Cards (0.3% – 0.8%), with neither standing a chance against TV2’s HD movie premiere, Mother’s Day.

While TV One topped all the ratings and channel shares in the key demos, they were lower than what MasterChef NZ’s finale helped to deliver the previous week, while TV2 gained at TV3’s expense.

Sunday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • A18-49: TV One, 7.3 rating/23.5 share; TV2, 5.9 rating/18.9 share; TV3, 4.7 rating/15.1 share
  • A18-39: TV One, 6.6 rating/22.4 share; TV2, 5.8 rating/19.8 share; TV3, 4.4 rating/14.8 share
  • A25-54: TV One, 8.5 rating/24.6 share; TV2, 5.9 rating/17.0 share; TV3, 5.4 rating/17.7 share
  • HHS/k: TV One, 8.8 rating/24.7 share; TV2, 8.4 rating/23.9 share; TV3, 5.5 rating/15.5 share.

On Friday and Saturday, TV2 blitzed the competition with the return of The Voice of Australia: the premiere averaged 10.7% – 15.9% and Saturday’s edition, 7.4% – 10.6%.

TV2’s Ocean’s Eleven also rated well enough (5.5% – 6.6%) to easily win its slot opposite TV One’s Endeavour finale (1.5% – 4.1%) and TV3’s The Lovely Bones (2.3% – 5.0%).

On Thursday, The Art of the Architect ended its run with an impressive 4.7% – 7.5% against the ultra-tough Police Ten-7 (11.9% – 17.8%) and Highway Patrol (10.9% – 13.7%) while The Three Day Nanny bowed out on only 2.7% -4.3%.

At 8.30, Arrow (6.1% – 8.6%) lost to TV One newcomer My Big Fat Gyspy Fortune (5.6% – 10.2%) in the 25-54 and HHS/k demos while CSI averaged only 3.9% – 6.9%.

TV2 also dominated at 9.30, with Tabatha Takes Over5.5% – 9.3% compared to Bodyshockers’ 3.2% – 5.4%.
