HD Ratings: Comedies Back With a Big Bang

TV2’s resumption of its Wednesday night comedy block, spearheaded by the premiere of Mom, would have had TVNZ programmers beaming more than the news that Nielsen under-reported the ratings for Sunday-Tuesday.

I’ll amend the relevant posts shortly but one of the big winners was Step Dave, whose 18-49 rating (including TV2+1 viewership) jumped from 6.9% to 9.1% after the errors were corrected.

Meanwhile, TV2’s refreshing of its Wednesday line-up, with a tweaked sitcom mix and Once Upon a Time’s third-season bow, saw it not only scoop all the major demographics — adults 18-39, 18-49, 25-54, household shoppers with kids — but also claim massive channel shares of 31% – 36%.

At 7.30, Mom averaged 10.2% – 17.0% of the key demos and its lead-out, the season premiere of Two and a Half Men, 8.2% – 14.4%.

But the star of the two-hour block was the season premiere of The Big Bang Theory (12.6% – 18.3%), which was the night’s second most-watched show after Shortland Street (15.6% – 26.3%).

The return of Home and Away has skyrocketed TV2’s early evening ratings, with Wednesday’s episode averaging 7.4% – 11.9% — making it significantly more popular than Neighbours an hour later at 6.30 (5.0% – 9.6%).

The return of 2 Broke Girls (9.4% – 13.4%) also made TV2 tops at 9.00 while lead-out Once Upon a Time, in its new slot, averaged 5.8% – 7.2% to beat TV3’s Sons of Anarchy (4.5% – 7.0%).

Sons suffered from lead-ins Hustling America (3.2% – 4.6%) and The Block: All Stars (6.3% – 10.4%) taking a hammering from TV2’s sitcoms.

However, the latter was still ahead of TV One’s The Inspectors (4.2% – 7.9%) and The Force (3.3% – 7.4%).

While their lead-out, Rake, improved on its premiere, with 2.1% – 5.4%, 9.30 drama Hostages slipped even further to 1.0% – 2.1%.

The peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • Adults 18-49: TV One, 4.2 rating/14.2 share; TV2, 10.0 rating/34.2 share; TV3, 5.6 rating/19.0 share
  • Adults 18-39:  TV One, 3.4 rating/12.2 share; TV2, 9.6 rating/34.2 share; TV3, 5.2 rating/18.7 share
  • Adults 25-54: TV One, 4.6 rating/15.0 share; TV2, 9.5 rating/31.0 share; TV3, 6.6 rating/21.4 share
  • HHS: TV One, 6.3 rating/15.7 share; TV2, 14.4 rating/35.9 share; TV3, 8.5 rating/21.2 share.
