HD Ratings: Comedies Draw Bigger Following Than New Dramas

TV One’s The Following returned on Monday with less of a following than it started a year ago while MasterChef NZ’s second episode largely finished third after TV2’s sitcoms and TV3’s The Block: All Stars.

The Following averaged only 1.7% – 3.7% of the major demographics (adults 18-39, 18-49, 25-54, household shoppers with kids) for its season-two premiere.

And that was opposite exceptionally soft competition on TV2 (Scandal, which averaged 2.0% – 3.8%) and the second half of TV3’s re-run of Date Night.

The movie averaged 5.0% – 5.7% from 8.30-10.30, and built in its second hour after the first was hammered by TV2’s Super Fun Night (8.2% – 10.3%) and Trophy Wife (7.5% – 8.7%) while TV One’s season-three premiere of Person of Interest interested 2.5% – 6.9%, or nearly double the viewership of lead-out The Following.

TV2 also was on a roll earlier, with Shortland Street’s 15.2% – 19.1% and The Middle’s 10.2% – 13.2%.

At 7.30, MasterChef NZ mustered 4.3% – 7.3%, which was well down on Sunday’s premiere but still competitive with TV3’s The Block: All Stars (6.0% – 8.5%).

The peak-hour ratings and shares were:

  • Adults 25-54: TV One, 6.6 rating/20.3 share; TV2, 8.0 rating/24.8 share; TV3, 7.2 rating/22.2 share
  • Adults 18-49: TV One, 5.4 rating/18.6 share; TV2, 8.2 rating/28.4 share; TV3, 6.2 rating/21.4 share
  • Adults 18-39:  TV One, 4.0 rating/15.7 share; TV2, 7.3 rating/28.6 share; TV3, 5.9 rating/23.1 share
  • HHS: TV One, 7.5 rating/22.3 share;  TV2, 9.1 rating/26.8 share; TV3, 8.9 rating/26.2 share.

  1. Just a heads up to Scandal fans, the show will return to Tuesday nights at 10.30 from February 16 on TV2. Hopefully TV2 plays it beyond season two. With The Following not firing and Scandal’s replacement TWD having issues in previous slots, we may well be in for another rejig of Monday nights.
