HD Ratings: CSI Improves for Finale But No Match for Big Mama

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation ended its 14th season on Thursday with competitive ratings in the demographic that matters most to TV3, 25-54 year-olds, as well as household shoppers with kids.

After several low-rating weeks, it bowed out with 6.1% of the 25-54 demo compared to Arrow’s 4.8%, Agent Anna’s 6.2% and Mrs Brown’s Boys: Who’s a Pretty Mama’s 7.6%.

The contest was even closer among HHS/k: 8.6% for CSI and Mrs Brown’s Boys, 7.2% for Agent Anna and 6.1% for Arrow.

But Arrow was tops in its first half-hour with its key demos, 18-39 and 18-49, although Mrs Brown’s Boys won all the major demos from 9.00-9.30.

The appeal of this low-brow BBC comedy is so phenomenal that TV One has scheduled another re-run of season one from this Thursday.

Overall, CSI averaged 4.0% – 8.6% of the key demos, Agent Anna 3.6% – 7.2%, Mrs Brown’s Boys 5.3% – 8.6% and Arrow 4.7% – 6.1%.

Earlier, TV3’s House Rules averaged 5.3% – 10.9% and was roughly twice as popular with HHS/k as the other key demos — so much so that its second half see-sawed with TV2’s top-rating Highway Patrol (10.0% – 11.4%) among HHS/k.

Week-on-week, TV One made the biggest gains while TV2 and TV3 retreated, with the former suffering the largest losses.

Thursday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • A18-49: TV One, 6.1 rating/22.2 share; TV2, 7.0 rating/25.7 share; TV3, 4.4 rating/16.0 share
  • A18-39: TV One, 5.1 rating/20.2 share; TV2, 6.7 rating/26.3 share; TV3, 4.2 rating/16.4 share
  • A25-54: TV One, 7.5 rating/24.9 share; TV2, 6.9 rating/23.1 share; TV3, 5.4 rating/17.9 share
  • HHS/k: TV One, 9.4 rating/24.6 share; TV2, 9.6 rating/25.1 share; TV3, 8.4 rating/22.1 share.

But TV2 dominated Wednesday with My Kitchen Rules (14.2% – 16.7%), The Big Bang Theory (9.4% – 12.9%), 2 Broke Girls (8.6% – 12.3%) and Once Upon a Time (4.0% – 8.2%).

The only challenge came when TV3’s Bouncers (3.0% – 4.5%) split the 18-39 audience with Once Upon a Time after House Rules averaged 4.1% – 7.0% against MKR.

Bouncers’ bounce back was bad news for TV One’s Nashville, which reversed its previous weeks’ gains to average only 1.5% – 3.2%.

MKR was even more popular on Tuesday (13.3% – 21.2%), when it scored more HHS/k without House Rules as its competition; instead, TV3 rival Grand Designs Australia averaged only 2.9% – 5.3%.

Consequently, lead-out NCIS struggled (2.4% – 5.2%), as did sister show NCIS: Los Angeles (2.5% – 5.6%), while TV One’s Britain’s Got Talent averaged 5.4% – 8.0%, and TV2’s Mom 7.6% – 11.5% and Two and a Half Men, 5.2% – 7.4%.

There was better news for TV3 on Monday, when its re-run of The Italian Job (6.2% – 7.0%) out-rated Grey’s Anatomy (3.4% – 7.0%) in the key age demos and yo-yoed with it among HHS/ks.

Otherwise, TV2 was tops with Shortland Street (15.1% – 20,6%), MKR (16.7% – 21.9%) and Trophy Wife (7.8% – 12.1%).

TV One’s Border Security (5.8% – 11.5%) thrashed TV3’s Road Cops (4.7% – 5.3%) at 7.30 and TV3 was again hammered at 8.00 when Kings Cross ER (2.6% – 3.8%) haemorrhaged against The Force (7.0% – 10.4%).

But TV One gave up these gains at 8.30 with Person of Interest (3.3% – 7.6%) and its stablemate, Intelligence (2.0% – 4.9%).
